UPDATE: PICS ADDED !!! New Member Bitten by the 8/81 bug

Post by Gunny »

Hello Everyone,

I am new member here that recently have been bitten by the 8/81 bug.
It started that one Saturday morning when I took a trip to my local gun shop
and in browsing around, with really no intention of buying much more then some ammo,
I spy this strange looking rifle tucked on the last slot of long wall gun rack.
I asked to look at it and I guess thats when I got bit ! Even though she was kinda
strange and homely looking, I knew at first site, she was coming home with me...
and She DID !!!!. sweet Model 81 300 savage....

Whats bad is a second trip just the other day...well, you guess it, another
lonely gal was spotted once again... Well for the moment she rest peacefully in
the shops Room of Fame...for layaways LOL

Is this bug really contagious like it seems ?????

Thanks to all for a wonderful site to this awesome rifle !!!!!

Oh my.

There really is no hope once you are contaminated - Jackitis is the ultimate result! Plus, there is no known cure but PICTURES do help to relieve the symptoms for the afflicted.

Welcome, we do love the company.

Hey Gunny!

Welcome to the 8/81 Forum.

Fortunately for me, my "intro" came by way of an inheritance.
I've got some pics posted somewhere in here along with a couple of doe taken this season.

Again, welcome to the forum and I hope you've got a very understanding better half.
By the time this affliction of yours is over, you seem like you're going to need it.

Hi Gunny,

A big old welcome to the Forum from Georgia. Where do you call home? :?:

As the official diagnostician of the ill-famed "jackitis", I am afraid it may be a little early to tell for sure. :? I would say that you are definitely exhibiting some serious symptoms of the yet to determined cure. Certainly, an occasional purchase will give some relief but it is a short lived remission and is easily re-activated at the very sight of another spring-pole. At least you have identified one of the more serious side effects and that being the wife. :P That is my biggest issue and as imfuncity will tell you, there is a definite need for a big sofa on occassions.

Please be advised that the very mention of providing a picture or two will not be forgotten by some members. You are on the hook for this one.

Be sure to jump right in with questions and issues. We have a lot of good knowledgable members who are not bashful about providing answeres and suggestions. Please be sure to view all the categories in the Forum and on the site to gather some very useful information about our beloved Remington 8 & 81 Rifles. :D

Kindest Regards,

Hi Gunny, and welcome to a great forum. I am fairly new to the forum also, but not to the great model 8's. I was given one by my father when I was about 16 years old in 1960, (which he later traded), and I inherited my Grandfather's model 8, which he and my father hunted with for most of my life.

There is an ointment that can be applied to this 8/81 bug bite...you can get it at the local bank.....$$$$$$$!!!

Thanks for the warm welcome, TX81, Jack1653, ctdog and all
I've been reading a lot here in the forum, and am learning a lot about
this rifle. This is awesome forum and wonderful people as well....
No problem Jack1653 soon as I can by daughters camera, I post some pictures.
I live here in Northwest Arkansas, in the Ozark Mtns, right now this area is in a
Major Blizzard, I got 15 inches already and still being hammered !!!

I am looking forward to hunting this year with my 81, I am sure it will handle the deer
nicely, I do a lot of Predator Hunting as well. Just couple weeks I ago, I ended up getting
a nice 128 lb Mountain Lion. Yep they are coming back it seems to these neck of the woods...

Pictures!! Gotta do the virtual hunt.... Did anyone take a camera when you got that lion? Hows’bout some pics of that blizzard(s) we keep hearing about? If I don't find the suntan lotion, that shiny spot on top is going to be a red beacon - 38 this morning and 70 by 2, guess I'll best be out and around by noon. (Stupid nanny state politically but the weather can be great, I'm not missing the cold.)

Hey I can definetely give the Blizzard pics LOL, I post here in a little while.
I was hunting alone that day, and was mostly trying to call in some Bobcats or Coyotes.
When I saw this girl a ways off, didnt actually belive I was seeing what I was.
Fish & Game said they were coming back to the area each year, Ive hunted these cats
a lot when I lived in Montana, but never saw one here. I took the shot and she went down.

It was getting close to sunset when I got her, and I had retrieve and get to the truck before dark
So I transported her home and was able to get a pic to come out clear enough from my cell phone
I post that along with the blizzard soon.

Down to 38 last night, suppose to do 70 today but... think we are going to have to suffer in the 60s. Still got to find the suntan lotion to keep the dome from becoming a aircraft warning beacon!

Just 'cause I feel so sorry for you folks in the midst of it all, reckon I'll do a little rimfire hole punching to relieve my concern.

Re: New Member...Bitten by the 8/81 bug -NEW PICTURES ADDED

Post by Gunny »

Well I finally got to borrow my daughters camera, and her giving me a quick crash course on how to use
it, I have made my feeble attempt at taken some photo's of my 81 300 savage. The way you see it is the
just as I bought it from the Shop. I haven't attempted to clean it it yet.

I noticed it has a Williams rear site on it, but I don't know anything about it. Does anyone know where I
can get some info on the sight, mainly, how does it adjust? or is it adjustable for windage and/or elevation ?
and or how its used in sighting in.

It came mounted to the rifle, sling, recoil pad, just as you see it. I am going to have to research the serial number
and other codes I see on it and try to figure out what year is was born.

Hope the pictures are ok....

Oops, Gunny, lost your post in my rush to go shooting before winter returned - didn't get out of the 50s today!

Nice looking shooter. What are your barrel code letters, let's see if we can't help you out on her age?

Based on your pictures it looks like I have a Williams like yours. I actually had two rifles that were very similar; choose to keep the one with the Williams as it worked better for me then the other with a tang sight.

Yours should be pretty easy to disassemble and clean, then it will be easy to see how it adjusts and works. If you end up with any issues let me know.

Thanks Guys,
Well finally we are in the 60's !!! and snow is melting and now we have MUD !!! LOL :o

If I look on the barrel ring at front of receiver and on the left side are three letters: K U U
and looking on the left side of the rifle, on the side of the trigger guard there is a number
which could be 18 or 81.

I don't know anything about what these mean, the serial number is 5 digit and in the low 48000 range

Bore on the rifle is really nice, clean, bright and good to better rifling.
I am sure its going to do well at the range, once I thaw out here LOL

As for Williams sight, I've never seen one of these before and have not ideal on how one would adjust this
type of sight. I found the Williams Gun Sight, web site but there aren't any options on there to download
any pdf file regarding a manual if it even came with one or any info on how they work.

Any info you guys can provide would surely be welcome and appreciated...
