I know that this a 8 & 81 forum, but as rifle enthusiasts', and collectors, I know that we all collect a lot of different rifles and pistols! I am not a huge collector, like some of you guys, but I like beautiful rifles from the past. I like rifles that are quality, and functional to my hunting interests (Black tail deer, mule deer, and elk). I am really enamored by these 14's and 141's. There are several on gunbroker that are very interesting.....particularly the REM 35's....so, my question is, which would be the preferred version.....14's or the 141's? I like the curved butt stocks of the 14's, and the forearms of the 141's. Any experience with either version, and /or preference would be greatly appreciated. Biased opinions, positive or negative, are also welcome.....

Sort of like 8 vs. 81. I'd go with whichever one was in the best condition at the best price. I like the newer 81s for that reason, but wouldn't pass up a good Model 8 at the right price. Depends a lot on your motivation - collectibility vs. utility - and your budget for indulging your fantasies. I'd guess a model 14 would be somewhat pricier than a model 141 in identical condition just because it is earlier, but that may not always be true.

For those of us who have seen the 8's and 81's, some of us have not seen the 14 or 141. Could y'all provide us pictures of them?

I thought no one would ask...! I finally got my 14 .25Rem yesterday, was trying to figure out some way to just sort of casually kind of mention it!!

I'm still trying to find a book I read about regarding the 14 & 141 but for now all I have to go on is the obvious differences you can see in the pictures:
Bottom is the 1913 Rem14 25Rem, top two 1949 & 1950 Rem141 35Rem In addition to the longer 24" barrel, larger forearm and butt stock, the 141 also has a shorter wrist/pistol grip, along with a standard rear sight (eliminating one of the grooves in the barrel).

Your Rem. model 14's are great. I have one I got not long ago and it's a 1913 model in .25 caliber also. I love it. I have killed a deer with it but am going to have to put a scope on it. It has had some minor alterations done to it so it is not collector quality and being as I am going to use it for my everyday deer rifle I don't see where a 4 power scope is going to hurt it at all. The shot I made was 100 yards with open sites and I really just got lucky hence the reason for the scope. I will post a picture when I get my scope on it...d2

As I said earlier, back when I was growing up in the 1950's these 14/141 rifles were common. I had several friends whose dads had and used used them. I haven't seen one for a long time, the exception being about 6 months ago when I saw one in .30 Rem at a gun show that was maybe a 1 or 2 on a scale of 10, and had a bore like a sewer pipe. I wonder where they all went?

The darn things seem to be coming out of the woodwork here in Ohio. I have yet to see an 8/81 at any of the local shops/shows, yet I've run across 2 141's and a 14 recently. One was a .35 141 I sent to Mitch, and the others are both .30's at Gander Mountain.

Almost forgot about the 14 on Armslist... So 4 I guess.

Must be something in the air. I just picked up one too. A .35 M14 made in 1927. Pretty much unaltered near as I can tell. Lots of finish wear but seems to function ok and bore is good. Didn't see anything alarming when I cleaned it up, just lots of old oil and powder fouling. Wood is good but oil soaked from long storage. I hope to get her out to shoot sometime soon but the cold and snow has set in here in the midwest so it may be awhile. I am looking forward to seeing how this light pump rifle feels shooting the .35 Remington.

Speaking of light - my scales indicates empty the 14 is at 7.35# and the 141 at 7.92#. Based on the longer barrel and stock configuration, I was expecting a larger weight difference. Was also hoping that barrel/weight would counter balance some of the 35rem's recoil. Hope to find out soon, as the 60 degrees is nice but the nasty wind makes me a more-fairer weather shooter.

Awww Mitch, everyone knows it isn't a proper range day if you don't have to wade through snow to pull targets....

Bummer to miss out on the snow - I even waited 'till the frost was gone. If temp isn't up to the age of shooter it resembles w-o-r-k!!

Mitch...let me know if you find the book on the 14's and 141's, as I just won a bid on a 141 in 35 Rem, with a date code of DU U. I tried to look up the date code on the remington society charts, and near as I can tell it is a Sep 1949 manufacture date. Not sure if I am reading it correctly though. The stock and forearm are both checkered, so it could be a B or C deluxe version. Need more information.....I don't know if they made upgrade models, and if they used a little different forearms....the forearm does not have the grooves....just the checkering. Very nice looking wood.....

Great looking rifle and great wood! My M81 Remington chart shows the same as yours 9.1949, that is how I dated mine - believe that is accurate for all Remingtons of the era. And, indeed that be the book – I’ll let Santa know....
