Anybody have dimensions of the .38 Remington cartridge?

Post by texassako » Wed Dec 05, 2012 10:14 am

I know it almost made it into production with a M8 marked for it and a few cartridges floating around the collector circles. Anybody have the actual dimensions or specs of it?

Short article about the .38 Remington with technical drawing of cartridge in issue no. 473 of the IAA journal.

I was going to say the same thing. If you are not a paid-up IAA member, you probably won't be able to access that information, but the key dimensions are shown below (there are 2 different known examples of the cartridge, one of which is unheadstamped, one UMC). Bullet weights are given as 100 grains (maybe should be 200?) and 230 grains. There is a UMC dimensioned drawing shown, which is dated March 10, 1910. No ballistic information is provided. It seems very odd that, at that late date, someone believed that such a cartridge was viable, as any performance difference between it and the .35 Remington would have been insignificant.
HS: UMC None
Rim: . 455 .457
Head: . 454 .466
Shoulder: .439 .444
Neck: .400 .404
Bullet: .370 .370
Case Length: 1.916 1.954 (Note: Neck length of the un-headstamped case was longer)
OAL: 2.512 2.555
Weight: 405 grs 432 grs (cartridge weight)
