Those 81's always bring high dollar $$$$$+ on GunBroker (and other sites). Have seen many of the 'bid' timing date/hour come and go with no bids. The sellers will relist many times with no bids. Sometimes the cycle will repeat itself quite a few times until a buyer buys it or the seller just quits listing it. They come up every once in a while. Those detachable magazines sell for a 'chunk of dough' also if they ever surface for sale. Outfit out of Missouri made and offered them. Not sure what the FBI did with all of their Remington's. I don't recall ever seeing any of them for sale on the market.

Here's a bit of 81 history for ya. Back shortly before WW2 Remington was contemplating a 81 redo calling it the Model 82. Actually notes indicate the first mention was back in 1935 around the same time the 81 came into being. Henwood in his book has a page or so telling about it. There are Remington meeting notes with how and what Remington was going to do. Mainly they were going to offer it with a crossbolt safety, eliminating the right side lever, have a detachable magazine, and a redo of the bolt handle and of the trigger guard. The last mention of it is in a meeting marked May of 1938 when it was tabled. WW2 ended any new offerings and after WW2, Remington just geared up again with the 81 then dropped it for the coming 740 model. Remington also had a prototype 81 made up in the late 30's that was a 38 caliber, but that never got past the R&D stage. The 8's and 81's never sold like Winchester 94's or Savage 99's, but they are unique and have a interesting history.

That's interesting to know that Remington kept manufacturing that type of weapons in 1942, I thought they'd be geared towards mass production for the military and that they'd shut off their civilian/LE lines.
