620A Stevens - recent win - in 20 gauge!

Post by Adam Lee » Sat May 14, 2016 4:48 am

OK, first off I am just testing to see if the google photo links work. Then, I'll upload/share the pics another way if that doesn't work. Please check to see if these image links show anything! I will do better later, I'm just happy to have located another old Browning design 520/620 pump!
This is a darn near mint condition Western Field 620A Stevens pump in 20 gauge - I'd been looking for a 20 a while, this of course came into my field of view and that was that!

I've been locked into school so long it's not even funny! Got another month and 10 days or so, until I am out of that place for good. I was offered a teaching job at another school nearby, much better in many ways, so I am a happy camper.

Hey Cam, Joe, Carl, Roger -

Any of you guys - can you humor me, and check on any of those links in the original post to see if they actually work? I have not done a link like that to a google photo file before on this site. Well, not exactly like this, anyway.

If the link works, great - if not, I'll know to try something else.

Thanks! I'm just all excited about finally getting a nice 620 Stevens in 20 gauge - can't wait to locate a used 20 gauge barrel to shorten as I usually do!

Appreciate your help.

Hey Adam,
They worked for me. Good looking 620. My only 520 is also a 20 gauge.

Thank you for testing out the links, Roger. I appreciate it!

I thought you had a 20 gauge 520, from back when I had some discussions about my pair of 520 project guns.

Be well!

Hey guys - let me know if you all hear about/know about any loose 20 ga 520/620 plain barrels!

Thanks! Gun should be at my FFL by tomorrow.

Pics coming soon. Promise!

Oh wow - this is the most minty-looking 620A I've seen around lately. I really lucked out!
If you all recall my obsession over the pair of 520 Stevens I traded years back from one of our esteemed board members, the 620A is the final iteration of that line.
Main difference in the manufacture aspects of this late Western Field SB620A in 20 gauge? There are just about zero identification markings whatsoever! Compared to my old 1918-1920's Stevens 520's, which were also Western Field branded, it is almost devoid of stamps.

Also, I was initially worried at the gun shop yesterday because for the life of me I could NOT get the front half to come apart, as these break-downs so readily do.

Turns out that at home, after some persuasion with a block of rubber and a mallet, the front end finally released. The problem? Best I can tell, it had never been taken down. Judging by the lack of significant scratch or rub marks on the magazine button (where your shotshells push up against as you load the tube) this may have been fired once or twice if at all.

Again, back soon with good pics from my work bench.

And please let me know of any loose 20 ga. 520/620 barrels I can cut down!

Still, no new pics. However - some data was gleaned by my initial disassembly of this old 620A.

observations/details noticed on markings of my new 620A:
  • “S” “G” and “T” are only common markings that appear together on key locations

these could likely be fitter’s marks

occur on butt, receiver end “face"

occur on forward edge of trigger assembly (above shell lifter)

occur on barrel at breech end face - at gap above break-down dovetails

occur on back “face” of stock bolt mount piece in receiver body
other notes:
  • two “stars” or asterisks on barrel - does this indicate improved bore? I recall my other older Stevens 520's had similar "stars" and they were either 3 stars for full bore, 2 stars for improved, something like that?

pistol grip checkering is crisp, new, and unstained by grease or cleaning agents - I have yet to see an older 40's or 50's shotgun in my possession with such crisp and clean checkering - amazed!

bolt is "factory" jeweled finish - nice touch, which I've seen now on other similar vintage 620A's
Hope you all have a great Thursday - can't wait till the weekend, so I can take down the receiver and see what I find there!

Thanks for your time.

I edited a few pics during disassembly, let's try these out for grins! When the image opens, click on the image and it should expand to large size format. Please let me know if the links do what they should!

Thanks for checking in, guys! I now have several leads for used 20 gauge 520/620 Stevens barrels but they aren't cheap as the 12 gauge - I am a victim of scarcity I suppose!

So I believe I'm down to 15 days in the classroom left - another day or maybe two doing staff development crap, then freedom!

My summer plan is to include playing around with 20 gauge loads in this Stevens to see what she likes to shoot. I sure wish Aquila made their mini-shells in 20 gauge - I'd love to see if they would cycle in this action.

I want to get some ideas on 20 ga. loads that you folks might know well - for HD, for trap/skeet/sporting clays games, as well as turkey and even deer loads that work.

I know the 12 gauge stuff pretty well, but never did have a 20 before!

Thanks team!
