Remington Model 11 Age?

Post by tx81 »

Sorry guys, I saw the post on the other Model 11/Pre-11 and had to ask about mine.

I also inherited a Model 11 from my grandfather. Would like to know how old it is, if possible.

Ser # 359XXX

Has an OX on the left side near where the 'date code' should be, along with "12 GA" and "FULL".
Shows "Browning's Patents Oct 9, 1900 Dec 17 01 Sept 30 02 June 16 03 Feb 13 06" along the top of the barrel along with "Remington Arms Co, etc, etc, etc"

It also has a "REP." next to what looks like an anchor on the right side of the barrel next to the receiver.

Any takers??? Oops, gotta be careful when wording things with this bunch.
How about - any ideas, guys???

According to the limited info I have the date code OX is for July, 1929 and serial 359xxx is also 1929 falling between 357432 and 375075 of the 17644 produced in 1929 all in 12 gauge, production of 20 gauge began in 1930 and 16 gauge in 1931 with introduction of the Sportsman 3 shot models, however, I have both 16 and 20 gauge specimens in regular 5 shot models for those years and no information regarding production. Other variations in the 3 shot Sportsman models include the serial numbers, some will an S prefix, some not, early ones will have roll engraving with 3 birds on each side of receiver and some with only 1 bird and serial numbers all over the place from 4 digit and higher, both outside listed range, with and without S prefix numbers outside listed range. HELP, badly needed is a well researched volume on Remington model 11 production, none is available of which I am aware.
Model 11s were my first love, now taken over by Remington 8/81 and FN 1900. One additional note to A5 collectors do not overlook Savage 720/745 models, there are some virtually unknown sleepers there, limited production or special order Trap and Skeet guns with monte carlo stocks, recoil pads, vent rib barrels and different engraving patterns, have only seen 2, one 12 gauge Trap and the other 16 gauge Skeet. Thanks for bearing with my rant, hope it helps as much as confuses, Jerry

Forgot to address the REP which I think is a Remington proof mark and anchor which I think is some kind of internal factory mark. jerry

Thanks Sighthound!! Been wondering about that ever since receiving it. Had always thought it to be much older, but never did much digging into it to find out.

tx81,

May or June 1929.

http://www.remingtonsociety.com/rsa/questions/FR10

The Remington Society has manufacturing date information on most models starting monthly in 1919.

It is difficult to find the link but it is there, look for Remington records book.

Good Luck with a great gun.
