Model 8 in 35 Remington. Primers backing out. Need help!

Hello to all. I have just recently picked up a nice model 8 in 35 remington. Last weekend was my first visit to the range and used remington brand ammo. Fired 1 shot to see how the gun worked, and all went well. The brass case looked normal. The next two shots both have primers backing out. I have stopped shooting this gun until I can find out what the problem is. The ammo is new, not reloads. I would think that this is a possible headspace problem but with the small shoulder of the 35 rem, could the ammo be seating its self deeper into the chamber which could cause a headspace problem? The chamber and the bore look good. If it turns out the headspace is bad, can the barrel be removed from the block and fixed?
Any suggestions on a good gun smith? I am in Illinois.

Thank you for your help.

Jon Z.

Jon Z.,

I do not consider myself an expert on these guns, but my favorite gunsmith would bet that its a headspace problem. We haven't seen a chamber problem from factory ammo.

Check the bolt lugs for wear where they seat into their recesses in the barrel nut. Also, be aware that these guns were somewhat hand-fitted in the factory-a new or replacement bolt bolt needs to be checked by a qualified gunsmith for proper fit.

I am in the PRK, left coast ya know, so I cannot recommend any gunsmiths in the Midwest. Others members of this forum will give you their opinions and much valuable help.

Good luck!

Shoot straight!

Your headspace problem is case related rather than rifle related. I had the same problem with one lot of factory ammo that had the shoulder set back too far. You can either pull the bullets and resize the cases or shoot them and take a chance on some streached brass.

Thank you for the help. I ended up taking the rifle apart and found a lot of carbon and gunk build up in the bolt face and the recess area on the barrel. Once all was cleaned and looking good, went back to the range and fired 5 shots. Primers are all in place now.

Now to start working on the other two I just bought. I must be hooked! lol

Good news. Not being a reloader or gunsmith I've been interested to know what the issue was and how to solve it. Thanks for the update.
