New Member- New to me Model 8. Please tell me what I bought here

Post by Trepang »

Good morning,

Last night on somewhat of an impulse I bought a 1922 Model 8 off GB. I have wanted one for sometime after reading Frank Hamer's biography and having an interest in the Bonnie & Clyde story.

I don't collect antiques - most of my guns are late model Marlin .45-70's, AR's, Mini-14, Browning BAR (not the cool M1918).

Here are a couple pics. Please let me know what you think of the condition.
Average for the age, below average, etc...

These are the best pics I have for now - the gun is being shipped from NV to MD as I post this.

Thanks in advance

Congratulations on your first Model 8. You will need to be careful, or you will soon own several more.

I am no expert, just a forum member, but I would say that your Model 8 is in above average condition, in fact very good condition for a Model 8 of it's age. It is in a very desirable chambering, as 35 Remington ammo is still manufactured.

Enjoy your new rifle, and welcome to the forum. There is a lot of good information, and a lot of good people to be found on this site.

Ah, so you got that one. Had been looking at it for a while, had it on on my watch list. Have contemplated getting a 81 in 35 Rem for a while, bid on a few, but didn't go all the way with them. Saw your Model 8 and thought it was in pretty nice shape for a Rem 8 of that age, was watching it for several days, never did bid on it. Sites like GB and GI are the only places I can really obtain 8/81's, pretty rare in my area. What I have seen are pretty bad shape. Enjoy it, I have two 81's in 300 Savage and really enjoy shooting them. Wish I could hunt deer in my state with them.

Looks like you have a pretty nice M8 on your hands. I think some ammo and a trip to the range should be on your list of things to do.
I also advise checking out some of the take down vids here on the site to help you with getting up to speed on cleaning and maintenance tasks. Complete disassembly most often is not need but its nice to know how its done. I my case some the rifles I have purchased did need to be taken apart for some repair but I doubt that your gun will fall into this class.
