Are my handloads safe

Post by Schofield »

Hey guys, I am loading 38 gr. of h4895 over a 200 grain hornady rn. This prints the best group so far in my 1907 .35 rem. Is this a safe load to continue with? It's just under the max in Lyman data using a Sierra bullet, but 1.8 gr. over according to hornady. Only fired a dozen or so rounds so far.

Hodgdon says the max load for H4895 is 38.5gr for the Hornady 200 RN at an overall length of 2.510". Given the case capacity and large bullet diameter, overall length will play a major role in max pressure. Shorter OALs can raise the pressure significantly.

You'll probably be fine, just be aware these rifles are out of production. If something breaks, it might be out of commission forever.

Thanks Fred, I will try for a lower charge. 36 grains doesnt group well so I will try a lower charge and hope it will chrono good enough for a hunting load.

I just checked my manuals:

The Lyman data lists a Remington case, Remington primer; Sierra 200 grain, H4895 - 38.5 (max)

Hornady lists a Remington case, Federal primer; Hornady 200 grain; H4895 - 36.0

Both loads are listed @ about 2,000 fps.

You are, like us, shooting a very old rifle, my advice would be to only load up to what makes the rifle function. Although a couple of rounds hunting shouldn't hurt.

Thanks Ken, I have both sierra and hornady 200 grain rn bullets but i have been using winchester primers. I'll get some federal LR primers and start on the low end of H4895.
