Rem Model 8 POE

A friend has a Remington model 8 for sale.
It has a POE, 15 rd mag. The mag ser. no. does not match the rifle.
I have not seen the rifle for several months so I cannot answer questions about the forend and other M8 POE characteristics.
Can some one give the average values for the following possibilities.
No 1,--An original POE rifle that has had the mags switched at a police dept.
No 2,-- An original POE rifle that has a matching no. rifle and mag.
No 3,-- a non original POE rifle that someone converted after finding an original POE mag.
Thanks,
Jim C

Hi jim c 351, great questions...the prices are considering that the rifles & magazines are in very good - excellent condition. Also, these guns sell so infrequently at auction that the prices below are an educated guess at best!

1) $5,000

2) $5,000-6,000+

3) $1,500

Cam,
Thanks,
It was interesting to learn that a miss matched mag wasn't a big deal, but a gun machined in Joe's basement was a real big deal.
This really puts the pressure a buyer to decide who did the work.
Many thanks,
Jim C

As a purist collector, yes I think a mismatched magazine is a big deal, even if from the same dept. Therein though, the serial number of the mag should be within the same range of the rifle, and/or verified from the same dept...otherwise I believe value can decrease significantly.

Bottom line, if the magazine serial number is mismatched, and you're not sure. CONTACT ME! I'll be happy to evaluate the rifle, compare serial numbers to our POE database and inform.

Cam,
Thanks for the offer. If anything develops I will surely take you up on the offer.
Point of clarification,-- The gun came from an auction, not a PD. I just used the PD for one of the examples. So there is no telling who previously owned it.
One thing I "think" I remember is the butt plate. I believe it had the tang on the bottom .
Thanks again,
Jim C

Hello Jim, I sold a 1931 Remington Model 8 POE in 35 Rem., with a correct era 15 round POE Model 8 magazine with a non matching serial number for $7,500 a few years back.

Bob,
Thanks for the input.
Was there any clue as to whether the conversion was done in the 30's or 90's.
Not sure what to look for.

The rest of the story,
I finally got a look at the rifle mentioned in the original post.
The 15 rd mag was very nice and had a 66,xxx serial number.
The rifle had a 35xx serial number and was not very nice.
The machining for the mag was very professional and locked the mag in soundly. The gun fired 15 rds without a problem.
The gun had a std M8 fore end . The butt stock was std M8 with a steel shotgun butt plate as pictured on page 48 in the book "the great Remington 8.
The receiver had about 6 holes drilled and trapped for a missing sight, and had blue wear.
The price was $4500.
Had the rifle number been closer to the mag number I would have made an offer.
As it was, I declined.
