Info on 81

New guy here with questions on model 81. Looks to be made in 1946. # 989 in 300 Savage. #'s match on all parts. Front sight is a Marble Sheard with a copper insert. Rear is a peep sight with no markings screwed on to left side of receiver. Checkering on forearm and stock looks different from any others I've seen. It is split just before it ends but is flat on ends and not pointed like others I've seen. Beavertail forearm with 20 stamped on inside. Can anyone give any info on this gun ? Thanks, Bob

Very cool old Remington. What you have there is a "First Year Production" 1936 Remington Model 81, (Serial #989) with a Lyman 41 side mounted receiver sight. The Model 81 was not offered in the 300 Savage caliber in 1936.
I'm assuming that you determined the 1946 year of production by the barrel code ending in the letters RR and most likely followed by the number 3 on the left side of the barrel jacket head. The number 3 would indicate a factory repair completed in 1946 (RR)...most likely a barrel replacement in the 300 Savage caliber... which was not offered in the Model81 line-up until 1940.
The checkering is not factory original, but looks good.
You have a "three digit" first year production model 81.
Congratulations... that's a keeper in my book!

Wow ! Thanks for the info and history on this gun. Yes it's stamped AAR3 with EE under that. Made in 1936 with repair in 1946 - older than I thought !So glad I found this group ! Before I think about re-blueing the metal will that effect any value it might have? Should I reload for this or can it handle factory loads ? I would love to take a whitetail with it same as Dad and Grandfather.

You're welcome Bob. The EE designates that your rifle was made in October (E) of 1936 (E). The first letter is always the month of the year. Remington used the word BLACKPOWDER and added the letter X to the end, for the 12 months of the year.
The date code BLACKPOWDERX was started in 1921. There's also a lettering system for the year of manufacturing as well.
In regards to using modern factory loaded 300 Savage ammunition... Your rifle will handle it just fine, with no worries... It'll eat it up and spit it out, as fast as you can pull the trigger! We have had many Model 81's in 300 Savage throughout the years and used modern day ammo with no issues what so ever.
Don't reblue the rifle!!!
Keep it just as it is. Hunt with it and enjoy it! Rebluing the rifle will decrease its value tremendously.

Thanks again for your reply ! My dad is 89 now and doesn't remember much about the gun except carrying it for many years deer hunting in northern Michigan. Guess I better start looking for ammo and sight this gun in !

Nice looking after market checkering. Cool rear sight. Hard thumping caliber.
What's not to like?
The Hornady ammo shoots just fine out of these old guns and is readily available.
