Stock Finish

Post by kenhwind »

I have that Model 8 with the CBR stock and forearm and I need to put some finish on it.
Any suggestions?

The original finish was lacquer, which is a royal pain in the butt. I rather like Tru Oil.

I thought they were varnished.
I wouldn't even consider lacquer, either varnish or gun stock oil.

I seem to recall a lacquer finish was typical for most of them. Though too I personally prefer the "True oil" type of finish. It takes a couple weeks for the many coats to dry, but is very glossy when done and "feels" great in the hand. My problem is tiny pits in walnut, maple, and most other hardwoods filling in. I get around it by cutting Trueoil with denatured alcohol used as a sealer/filler. It dries immediately, soaks into the grain, and allows smoothing sanding with 400-600 paper to remove the raised grain like water does. Without the drying wait overnite. Try it you may like the result.
