Barrel jacket scope mount

Post by jim18611865 »

I know this sounds crazy, but has anyone tried mounting a long eye relief scope using the rear sight screw holes?
I can see all kinds of issues, but it seems possible if the barrel jacket and scope could stand up to the recoil.
Also would it still cycle with the added weight? Scope would need to be as light as possible, yet very durable. I see the 1911 guys are now mounting scopes on the slides.

Just food for thought. It would be nice to have a scope that didn't require drilling holes.

Yes, I once mounted a scout scope on a model 8. I found a base that had a radius close to the barrel jacket contour and the mounting screw holes matched the rear sight mounting holes. I shot about 50 rounds of full power reloads and everything functioned fine. This was a 35 caliber. I can't remember the make or number of the mount. I was concerned about the barrel jacket holding up under recoil especially since I could only use one scope ring. I removed the scope after I found a Lyman reciever sight to fit.

Norm,

Any issues with the ejecting brass hitting the underside of the scope?

Thanks.

I put a reflex sight on mine, and found a couple other photos of pistol-scoped M8s too:

I don't see why it wouldn't work. The pic showing the mount screwed into the sight base holes and then the inverted scope ring further forward would mount a long eye relief scope easily. Pistol scopes have to take abuse because they're designed to be mounted on things like .44 magnums that generate far more recoil than one would get in rifles this heavy. As a matter of fact, this is a project of mine that I'll be getting to after hunting season.

Wait a minute, that barrel jacket doesn't move does it when firing?
Otherwise Fred's inverted ring would not have worked.
This seems like a good project.

Thanks for the ideas.

Jim, Scout scope mounts forward of the ejection port so the eyepiece doesn't interfere with ejected cases.
