25rem 115gn hollow point from 117gn sptz

Post by h.charlie »

So I ran out of 117gn round nose and I remembered I saw something about using spritzers and sniping the nose off to make a flat nose, so I tried and it will load from mag to chamber, so I took it a step further and hollowed the nose out 1/8 inch using a knife and my cordless drill then smoothed out any tool marks with 400 grit sand paper, I'm liking how things are turning out and would like to share data I'm starting to gather to build a load, so after they are cut the length of the projectile is .986 to .979 inches and weighs in at 114.8gn witch makes them a .01 shorter then a round nose. Can I use the seating depth of the 117gn rn and the load data on a 115gn projectile to make a safe test load? Or just start with a 10% reduction in load data for the 117gn. Pics to come and any questions and th ought welcome

Man should have put a pic of the spitz and round nose in there but if you can't tell the bullet to the left is the hollow point and the one to the right is the flat nose

I don't know much about reloading, but please keep us posted. This is quite interesting, I'd like to know how they end up shooting.

The 117 grain Hornadys are like hens' teeth right now. With that in mind (and saving my last two boxes for deer), I got some 120 HP's with a cannelure that are made for the 25-06. They are too long in front of the cannelure for a Model 8.

I made a little collet for the lathe and parted them off flat, but one would hang up on the feed ramp every now and then. So I reground the tool to put a radius on them as well. The bullets end up weighing 112 grains and are .908 long, and shoot exactly the same as the Hornadys. The radius cured the feeding problem. At 1975 fps, they shoot a composite 25/50/100 yard group of 2 1/2".

I am hoping to poke some into a pig or two, as I suspect the jacket is heavier for the 25-06 velocities and may penetrate a little more.

They worked didn't shoot anything to get a good idea on expansion or bring a chronograph, but at 75 yards I got a decent group for just wanting to see if they would cycle the action properly, with the lighter bullet I did notice a little bit more fouling

Charlie,
A good group at that range for iron sights.
I'm curious, did you weigh the finished bullets after the tip modification?
Differing weights could very well cause the horizontal stringing on the target, if grouped by weight you may get a lot tighter groups.
From experience you can get one ragged hole about 1" with a accurate peep sighted rifle at 75 yds. You got to try real hard, but it can happen.

I did weigh them. Before I loaded them the lightest was 114.4 gn and the heaviest was 114.8 gn. The powder throws where also a little hit and miss, but I set the dropper so my highest spike was 23 gn of imr 3031 and the lowest 22.8 gn. Case over all length was set to be 2.575, but the cutting of the nose left the bullet .01" shorter then a hornady rn, so i allowed them to go as short as 2.568 and never bigger then 2.575, the primer I selected was was a WLR but I think I might drop the load a grain or two and use a magnum primer to try and get a cleaner burn. I also am thinking of using a concave punch and my press to bend the nose in of the bullet as I had a jam on the first round in a clip of five, but this is just all thought still getting thought out

I have the case weights and volumes, and on a normal load I would be able to tell witch hole was witch bullet on the target but I wanted to see if it was a good idea first. I couldn't stress the fact enough It is any re-loaders responsibility to follow safe reloading practices and look out for everyone best interest
