Model 8 Buttplate

Post by Jerry_H »

What is the right buttplate for a Model 8 of 1909 vintage? My 25-35 has no stock and I would like to find the right buttplate for a replacement stock.

I have this one but don't think the it's right one. It seems to me I've seen one like it but with the Remington logo on it.

Thanks,
Jerry

most likely the original was a semi curved hard rubber buttplate with molded inscription "Remington Arms Co." inside a circle (pictured below). I believe reproductions are currently still made.

81police,

Thanks for the reply. I see the repros for sale and will probably go that route.

So what does my buttplate belong on?

Thanks,
Jerry

Jerry,
I've one that looks just like yours on a Model8, depends on the actual dimensions. If you are fitting a reproduction stock it will be easier to use the plastic ones. Getting the angle on the toe of these metal ones can be hard to get a clean precise fit.
If you ever have to fit one of the "S" curve military style buttplates, let me know I'll send some photos of what to expect.

At Dallas Arms Show on June 8, some dude had at least 20 Remington buttplates of different types and materials ...
take one or all for $2 each. Seemed reasonable, since I recently bought a Winchester steel for $49.

I have a reproduction I bought on eBay that looks like the picture 81police showed. I was going to bring back a model 8 I had and decided to part it out instead so the plate is yours for $12 plus shipping $2.50). I have some screws I will include (left over from my dad who was a gunsmith before he died). I believe these can be molded easily to the back face of the stock by boiling them in water and then shaping them to the stock while still hot. I have done this with another one and it worked fine.
