8mm Mauser ammo clips?

Post by VTRem35 »

Anyone ever used any 8mm Mauser clips in your Model 8/81?
I'm understanding they will work, but wanted to know if there is any difference between an Argentine Mauser clip and a German one for instance.
I think I'd pick the two piece versions instead of the single piece clips.
Lots of 8mm ammo clip options on Ebay, I just want to be sure I don't make any mistakes and buy the wrong clip, so any advice or experience with 8m Mauser clips would be appreciated.
I've never seen an ammo clip used in a Model 8/81. Once they are empty, are they easy to get out?
Thanks,
Kendall

1949 and 1943 Egyptian 8mm (7.92x57) strippers work just fine with .35 Remington.

Here's some evidence: Joe's reloads lined up in a 1949 Egyptian Mauser clip.

Adam (or Joe?), what kinda bullets (and loads, if you're willing to share) do you have there?
Look like soft-point RN? 180s, 200s?

I haven't been able to find 200gr RN but as I mentioned over in Troubleshooting, my .35 seems to really like them and would like some reloader feedback as well.

Thanks!

Thanks! That pretty much convinces me that most of the various country of origin stripper clips will work.
Pretty great alternative to buying one made for the Model 8/81.
They are available many places and they are cheap.

Off the topic, but do you do those reloads? I've been told that I should use a crimp die when reloading the .35, but the reloads I have don't looked crimped, and neither do the ones you posted.
What are the bullets you have there and what do you use for powder?
I have some old (like 60's) Winchester 200 gr RN and some Hornady 200 gr RN bullets and will begin reloading once I pick up a press. I have a crimp die on order, but not sure I'll use it as it seems like the rounds I've seen so far have not been crimped.

Thanks,

Kendall

Joe.

Sounds like you've got some PM's to shoot out -

Yo Dale and "other dude" (sorry)......

These were Joe's reloads I picked up for some shooting here in VA.
Joe - I can dig back through our emails, but you'd be able to tell if these were the 200's or the 180's.

Thanks, Adam. Hear that, Joe? Tell us all your secrets!!!!

Seriously, though, not much info out there on 8/81-specific load favorites. There's a great thread at Marlinowners comparing .35rem bullet options and GBO has a good smattering of people's data, but not for these rifles. And it's all new to me, but great fun to pore through.

However, we now know who's holding 200gr RN bullets. Kendall may be expecting LOTS of PMs from that admission!

Dale

edit: just kidding, VTRem - thanks for sharing your findings; hold onto those RNs. I just got some Speer hot-cor 180 FN to try out when I get motivated to try this reload. Sorry to hear about your Leverevolution experience, as I also got some to work out my .35 FTF issue - oh, well, there's always the cases to reuse.
edit2: sorry about the thread drift, all!

Great reloading chart here - http://www.hodgdonreloading.com/data/rifle

My understanding is that we need to be right around 2000 fps for best accuracy. The slow turning grooves in our barrels want a slow bullet.

My Model 8 loves the Remington 200 gr RN and shoots them very straight. It DOES NOT like the Hornady Leverevolution flex tip and almost all Leverlution shots went 3" high and 8" right from where the Remingtons were impacting.

Dale, I'm only sitting on 200 bullets at the moment, but my lgs does have a couple more boxes of the Hornady 200 gr RN. I'm pretty sure the Hornady bullets are current production bullets.

This is the results for the 200 rn Hornady bullet with the various Hodgon powders. My first choice would be to use the LVR with 42 grains, 2,040 fps at 25,600 CPU(PSI) Perfect speed and very low pressure, then maybe the Varget with maybe 37 grains would maybe get the right results. I also lean towards the LVR as I can reload for the Marlin 336 in .35 Rem with the hotter load of 45 grains LVR, 2,235 fps at 31,200 CPU(PSI)

The Remington factory 200 gr Core-Lokt round is roughly 2,000 fps at 33,500 CPU(PSI). It may be important to match those numbers. The low CPU(PSI) I stated for the LVR load, may affect cycling of the Model 8/81. I'll need to get more info before I start reloading, that's for sure.
