.35 Rem cast bullets loads

Post by pardiniman54 »

Does anyone have experience loading lead cast 205 gr bullets and if so some load data would be appreciated. Not for hunting just punching holes.

Just for general information I have a cast bullet load I use in my Marlin lever gun for cowboy silhouette work. Its an RCBS 200 grain flat point gas check cast from wheel weights. Loaded over 21 grains of IMR-4198. Just enough to knock over the rams at 200 yards. I plan on trying it in my M8 but don't know if it will operate the action. Not a big deal to up the load some until it will as the max Lyman book load is 26 grains for a cast bullet in the 200 to 204 grain range. Accuracy is very good in the Marlin. Cant believe it wont be OK in the M8 but wont know until I try it.

Is that group at 50 or a 100 yards :?:

My Marlin 1895 45-70 (gone now) would never group that tight even w/ a 9x scope.

50Yards. Benched. Never tried it at 100 on paper but it nails rams at 200 when I do my part.

I've used the RCBS 35-200-FN in my Model8 35 caliber. Bullet will weigh as much as 210 gr. depending on exact alloy. A load of 18.0 gr. of Hercules 2400 would work the action in July but in September when it was 40- 50 degrees cooler it did not. Ambient temperature appears to make a difference. This was with the older slower burning 2400 not the current faster burning Alliant 2400. With a Lyman 358315 200 gr. bullet a charge of 23.5 gr. of ReLoder 7 worked the action reliably in January. This load chronographed 1445 fps 10 ft from the muzzzle. A load I use in a Marlin 336 is the RCBS bullet with 33.5 gr. Vihtovouri n133 works the action vigourously and chronographs 1916 fps. Remember in reloading CAUTION is a virtue.

I bought some .358" cast gas checked 35 Cal. 245 gr. FNGC bullets, Is anyone using a heavy bullet in their reloads? I want more of a really mild, reliable load that cycles the action and does well around 50 yards. Or did I buy some bullets only good for 35 whelen. :?

I want a 'mouse fart' load using a very heavy cast bullet going subsonic that will still stabilize as well as (gently) operate the action. If I can get away without a gascheck I'd prefer it. So I'm interested in your experience with the heavies.

Sorry I'm of no other assistance.

I've had good luck with the following in my 1927 Model 8 in .35 caliber:

Lyman 358315 bullet cast from wheelweights (forgot to write down if water dropped or not. Weighs 200 to 204 grains finished)
20.5 grains of SR4759
Remington 9.5 primer
Remington brass

Average velocity=1735.
Accuracy was good and load cycled very well but was mild on the gun.

Be aware that the Lyman manual states that 21 grains is maximum. I couldn't get the accuracy with milder loads.

Tried numerous other charges and powders and the only other one that was acceptable in accuracy to me was 26.5 grains of Reloder 7 with everything else the same. I just like SR4759 because it works good in several other cast load in other rifles for me.

Hope this helps.
