Just bought a Model 81 but it appears that the s/n is 65054 on left side of receiver, how can this be if s/n went to 55XXX??

Good question and those with the "book" will be along shortly to let you know where your rifle stands regarding DOM.

SNs somewhat beyond the the theoretical highest SN published for the M81 are known. I have one of them (1950 coded).
