Forearm on 81

Post by TNyoteboy »

Anyone else have a problem with their forearm rotating a slight bit along with the barrel jacket?

Eventually your forearm will get a little sloppy if you take it on and off enough. When you tighten down the screw that holds it in place, it just tightens the for-arm up against the small piece that is riveted to the barrel, it also touches the barrel shround and the piece that the takedown screw goes thru. Eventually that all gets worn down enough where the wood will actually be a little lose, no matter how much you tighten the screw. A little fitting and or shimming, maybe even a fine coat of bedding epoxy in the right places will tighten things back up. It's all done on the inside, so what it looks like doesn't necessarily matter.

If your barrel shroud is lose, thats a little harder to fix. It is actually threaded into the barrel shroud extension and then pinned in place with a rivet, usually on the left hand side. Might be hard to see as they are ground smooth before bluing usually and blend in pretty well. Over time and use, that rivet may loosen up and allow the shroud to turn a bit. About the only thing to do is put in a larger rivet. Can't turn the barrel in any tighter as then your front sight won't be on top of the barrel. You can drive the original out with a small drift and then drill a slightly larger hole to accomodate a modern steel rivet. You can do it with the barrel in place if need be, just take the gun apart, pull the barrel all the way back and use something to hold it in place. that will give you enough space to driver the rivet out as it's anly about an 1/8" long.

Nope, forearm screw is good and tight. I finally noticed the small rivet. It moves just the littlest bit, but just enough for the barrel jacket to rotate every so much. Don't know if it's enough trouble to go through to fix. I can live with it. Thanks guys
