35 Remington

Post by Wildgoose »

Well, found some old dies (Lyman American) of unknown vintage, a Lee shell holder head that one of the local gun shops just happened to have one of and preped the ten cases in my meger stash. Now all I needed was some .35 cal bullets. All I was able to find today was one box of Sierra 225 grain SP's, at the same place that had the one shell holder head. Gee and I thought it was going to be easy to find componets for this caliber. At any rate, has anyone tried these in the M8? My three loading manuals only list loads up to 220 grain bullets. I feel OK with using a starting load for the 220's with the 225's just to get something to shoot put together. And I am going to have to seat these fairly deep to get the proper over all cartridge length right. Most likely not going to be the most accurate load but will work until I can get some 200 grain Rem ordered. At any rate if anyone has a load using these let me know how it worked, or didn't, if you could. Thanks.

If you wish to use lighter bullets, .38 Special/.357 bullets can be used, preferably jacketed. Don't worry about OAL, just keep it below the 2.52" maximum. Contrary to some opinions, seating a bullet more deeply does not raise chamber pressures. Some reloading manuals explain this, I think Speer's is one.

My manuals (except for one) all stop at 200 grain bullets. However, I do have an older Speer manual that includes loads for 220 grain bullets, to wit:

37-41 IMR 4320 (1810-1958 fps)
35-39 IMR 4064 (1736-1968 fps)
35-39 IMR 4895 (1718-1952 fps)
32-36 IMR 3031 (1624-1920 fps)
27-31 IMR 4198 (1698-1898 fps)

A 5 grain heavier bullet won't make any perceptible difference, and I would have no hesitation in using the same loads for the 225 grain bullet.

I have an older Lyman manual that recommends several loads for the 158 grain jacketed bullets:

26-30 Hercules 2400 (2196-2400 fps)
28-36 IMR 4198 (2050-2400 fps)
37-39 IMR 4895 (2000-2150 fps)
35-40 IMR 3031 (1970-2200 fps)

I am somewhat partial to using stick-type propellants instead of ball propellants in these old calibers, principally, but not entirely, because of historical authenticity. The duPont IMR (single base) and Hercules HiVel (double base) propellants were those used back in the days when the M8/81 rifles were popular.

Hodgdon has some 220 loads: http://data.hodgdon.com/cartridge_load.asp

Western(Ramshot & Alliant) and Vihtavouri had nothing on the 35, and Hercules just had a Reloder 7 load for the 220 grain: http://www.alliantpowder.com/reloaders/ ... 3&bdid=682

I could not remember any others off the top of my head that have load data online.
