Took the ole 81 in .35 out to the deer fields this year. First one down was a nanny goat at about 85 yards:

Re: 300 Savage - Reduced Recoil Load

I note that an lot of these guns have after market recoil pads fitted, albeit some more skillfully than others. Mine has one such pad and even with that the recoil is pretty darn "savage". .35 is still stout but not nearly as bad. A reduced load would make this caliber more user friendly.

Shall do. I've found that those laser dot bore sighters are pretty darn handy on these off side scope mounts. Makes initial sighting in much easier.

Got some 150 grain Remington ammo that hopefully won't bust me up too bad. :D

My newest model 81

I found this lovely on GB and simply had to have it. 35Rem, which oddly, I hadn't had one of yet and a scope mount. I think that's why I got it as reasonably as I did, all the holes in the receiver. Anyway, it was easily in the worst internal shape of any of these guns I've come across. Inside the r...

Re: New member and 8 owner

The .25 caliber guns were the least popular, by all accounts, and we're discontinued around 1936, if I remember right. This only makes them that k uch more collectable for us 8 heads. :)

That is one pretty rifle. I think I see in the photo of the left side a dent in the magazine.

Yes, a complete tear down when first bought. As we've seen, the insides can look like they're full of old road tar that has to be scooped out with a spoon. Once taken apart, and thoroughly cleaned, i like to lube the barrel/recoil spring area with a light moly grease and the action parts with a ligh...

I have found that when using 3031 in .25 Rem that the starting charge, 21 grains, does not work the action at all. at 24 grains the action begins to work, but not always, and I get several stovepipe ejection malfunctions. 26 grains makes the action work with zest! I use 25 grains now to not over str...

Shot about 2.5" at 100 yards before the barrel heated up. When it got hot the group went all to hell. Oddly, it preferred the 150 grain round nose over the 160 grain Hornady pointed nosed bullets.
