Why isn't the serial number stamped on the jacket head. From what I have read it was general practice to stamp both areas. Is it possible with this early piece, double stamping wasn't procedural or did the heads get stamped when they got sent back to Rem. for a repair

just picked up an 81 today and the barrel jacket bushing does not have the squared off cuts for removal, instead it has flat spots at each side. is this an after market bushing or did remington make this modification. serial number 29497

i think i have seen the answer on this site before but i can not find it. i seem to remember the 81 jacket will fit the receiver but the forearm swivel screw will not fit. is this the case

Sometimes (but not always) the serial numbers are stamped on the furniture under the metal, but in removing them to look, there is a risk of breaking particularly the butt stock.
