John,
I think you are correct about the aluminum plate. I wonder if the owner did it himself, or asked Kreiger & Sons to do it as part of the modification.

Re: 2022 Model 8 & 81 Prices ????????
I have noticed that the trend on Gunbroker seems to be less low start price auctions, and more high dollar start bids/buy-it-now prices. Most of those guns have 0 bids. Obviously, the guns with no bids are a bit over the market price, so perhaps those gun prices could be used to set top end values. ...

Re: Model 8 at auction
Maybe the rifle was a presentation to Mr. Rockefeller for his service on, or retirement from the Remington Board of Directors. It could be that it was a last minute type thing, where they (Remington) took a standard rifle, swapped out the stocks to make it presentation worthy, and engraved his name ...

With that history, I would not be bothered a bit by the stocks not being serialized to the rifle. It is obvious that a man of means like Mr. Rockefeller, who was also a Remington board member had the stocks upgraded. I think that it is still "original", even though the numbers don't match....

I guess that the fact of the rifle having really nice wood does support the fact that whoever owned it, special ordered it and had some money to invest in a rifle. One has to wonder about the history of this rifle, just like one that was hunted/used hard. It's history may tell an equally interesting story.
Where has it been all of these years? How many owners? Has it ever been fired? Was is "lost" for a while and resurfaced?

Welcome Redwing 623.
You appear to have a Model 8 that has had the forestock replaced with a Model 81 forestock. You could get a Model 8 forestock to replace the Model 81 forestock, or just enjoy it as is. Do you plan to hunt with it, or just shoot/collect it?

It is in overall really good shape, numbers match, wood is good, metal is gray patina with some bluing left. It functions/shoots very well. Let me know if interested ...
