Did you ever check with your machinist friend about making more of these takedown tools for sale? I would definitely buy one.

New .30 Rem brass splitting necks !?
I just fired my 1949 Mod 81 in .30 Rem for the first time. I had loaded brand new Graf brass with 29.0 gr of IMR 3031 pushing a 150gr Hornady RN Interlock bullet (.308"). Afterwards, I noticed that 6 of the 50 brass had splits on the base of the necks just above the shoulder. To be honest, I ha...

Re: Barrel nut washer was off-center from barrel thread groove
Well guys... I think that I solved my rotating barrel washer problem (for now). I merely took a center punch and punched the barrel washer nub near the end on both sides. This created enough extra metal on the tip of the nub so that it now stays in the thread groove. I still plan to eventually chase...

Re: Barrel nut washer was off-center from barrel thread groove
Thanks. I had thought about using TIG or MIG welding to increase the depth of the barrel nut washer nub, and may go that route if I can't restore the flattened threads. Noob Admission! Sheepishly I have to admit an initial error in my understanding of the washer and groove function. I had thought th...

I need a .30 Rem recoil spring
One of the ends on my .30 Rem Model 8 recoil spring is bent inward such that the end of the spring sticks through the hole of the recoil spring case when inserted. I will try to bend it back to a more correct configuration, but I would rather replace it. So... if you have a spare .30 Rem recoil spri...

Re: Barrel nut washer was off-center from barrel thread groove
Well.... I believe that the barrel threads are 24 to the inch according to my thread file, but I don't think I shall try to repair the flattened threads with it. I will contact local gun smiths to see if they have proper thread dies to restore the damaged threads. If anyone knows the proper thread d...

Re: Barrel nut washer was off-center from barrel thread groove
I have a thread file somewhere. I will see if the threads match up with any teeth on the file and slowly chase the thread back. Does anyone have a picture of what the coarse washer teeth look like to compare against my washer? And if that is the case, then I will have to find a coarse teeth washer f...

Re: Barrel nut washer was off-center from barrel thread groove
The barrel nut is .983" in length and has 25 teeth (although the Henwood book says 24... and I counted them several times and came up with 25 each time :o ). The barrel nut washer appears to have many teeth, so maybe the two are not matched. How far down should the barrel nut be tightened on th...

Re: Barrel nut washer was off-center from barrel thread groove
I was hoping that may be the issue, but my washer ID measures 0.555 +/-, so I guess it actually is the .30 Rem washer.

Re: Barrel nut washer was off-center from barrel thread groove
Here's a pic showing the position of the washer when it rotates counterclockwise on top of those two rear flattened threads. The groove is at 1 o'clock and you can just see the washer bulge at 12 o'clock. Once it is in that position, it will not allow the washer to be easily removed. I need to figur...

Barrel nut washer was off-center from barrel thread groove
I just bought a 1929 Model 8 in .30 Rem and am taking it apart to clean and inspect before shooting. I had trouble getting the barrel out of the shroud because its threads were hung up on the barrel nut washer. The little bump on the inside of the barrel nut washer was not lined up with the groove i...

Re: Weak ejection on Model 81 .30 Rem
It's probably my anemic hand loads. I used 29.0 gr of IMR 3031 pushing 150 gr Hornady RN (#3035) around 2000 fps. I had already disassembled and thoroughly cleaned the rifle before shooting.

Weak ejection on Model 81 .30 Rem
I shot my Model 81 in .30 Rem for the first time the other day and the ejected brass was only going about a foot directly upward and dropping back down on my arm on the shooting table. I realize that the extractor is on the 12 o'clock position and that the ejector is on the 6 o'clock position, and t...

Can you convert a .32 Rem to a .35 Rem by switching parts?
Can you simply convert a Model 8 from .32 Rem to .35 Rem by merely switching out the barrel assembly, bolt assembly, and magazine? A friend has a pistol grip .32 Rem and a straight stock .35 Rem. He wants a pistol grip .35 Rem. I told him it should be a simple swap out of parts on the receivers. Is ...

Wow! There is somebody else out there as twisted as me! I have become an aficionado of all things B&C in my retirement. My buddy and I are trying to collect firearms that are representative of those used by B&C or by LEO against them. The Dr. Shehee rifle borrowed by Bienville Parish D...

Re: RCBS shell holder won't work
Well, that's not very comforting. I just ordered two RCBS #19 shellholders to use in loading my new .30 Rem Model 81. I always order two shellholders so that one can remain in the press, and one in the primer tool. I just ordered a bunch of .30 Rem from Graf, so if the shellholders won't fit, RCBS i...

Need .30 Rem reloading advice
Well... I just picked up my sixth "greatmodel8".... an 81 in .30 Rem made in May 1949. I already reload for .32 Rem, .35 Rem, and .300 Sav, but my initial searching for info on .30 Rem reloading is not very promising. First of all... my Hornady 10th Reloading manual doesn't cover it! :o I ...

Re: Unseated fired primers on reloaded .35 Rem ammo?
Yes... I need to measure the headspace with my Hornady kit, and keep the brass specific to each .35 Rem rifle. I will then just neck size to see if that helps move the shoulders up to where there is no excessive headspace.

Re: Unseated fired primers on reloaded .35 Rem ammo?
You are right about the most recent Hornady reloading manual being #10. I was going off of memory. And you are probably right about the mid - range load being too light to force the case back against the bolt face. The brass is new mfg Hornady and below the max length allowed. The gun cycles fine wi...

Unseated fired primers on reloaded .35 Rem ammo?
I've experience some partially unseated primers on some reloaded .35 Rem ammo that I reloaded and fired myself in two different Model 8 rifles. The loads themselves are in the middle of the recommended ranges from the Hornady Reloading Manual No. 11 with 32.0 gr of H4895 pushing a Hornady 200gr RN I...

Nope... I haven't seen a Bolt Lock Spring by itself. I wish I did. The Bolt Lock is a pretty tough item, but the little flat spring.. not so much!

Re: What happens when bolt carrier latch spring is broken?
Rifleman,
I was "trying" to use the Remington factory schematic/parts list on page 24 from "The Great Remington 8" book by Henwood, but just grabbed the wrong part name and number. I got my replacement Barrel Lock and Spring from eBay.

OOPS! I made a mistake! It is not the "Bolt Carrier Latch Spring" that I was talking about. It was the "Barrel Lock Spring" (part #131). I misread the parts schematic listing. I apologize for the confusion.

Re: What happens when bolt carrier latch spring is broken?
Agreed... I wouldn't knowingly shoot a gun with a broken part. I was just wondering what would happen if the spring broke during a firing session. That may have been the reason that these two guns were sold.... they may have been malfunctioning due to a broken spring. Anyway... I've fixed my "n...

Re: What happens when bolt carrier latch spring is broken?
Thanks Cam, but does that mean that the gun wouldn't cycle or worse... would damage parts. I ask because this little spring seems to be a common fail-point (based on my 2 out of 5 rifles bought having a broken bolt carrier latch spring)... and if the spring breaks during normal firing in the future,...

What happens when bolt carrier latch spring is broken?
I've found two broken "bolt carrier latch springs" in two of the guns that I've bought. Good thing that I tore them down to inspect and clean before shooting them and I was able to replace the springs, but I was wondering what would happen if you fire the gun with a broken spring?
