Re: First time shooting problems with 300 Savage 81
Rman, thanks for your faith in me, Sometimes I wonder if it is deserved, but here goes. :) I am sure I have pulled a bolt carrier with the trigger assy still in, yet it easier to install with the assy out. The bolt stop lever is raised when the barrel is out. It makes the carrier challenging ...

Re: Recoil Spring dimensions for Model 8 in .35 Rem
When you say "recoil spring" is it the one in the tube behind the bolt or the one in the barrel sleeve at the front or the one at the back in the sleeve? There are 3 that make the action work. Recoil spring is typically in front behind the barrel nut. Buffer spring (usually square cross-se...

RMan,
You shoulda dickered on the 300, most tang sights are worth $100 at least. Were it the FBI sight that could triple. Plus the 300 is just a little less than the 308. HHAARRRGGGH

Re: First time shooting problems with 300 Savage 81
A couple thoughts: The firing pins are prone to mushrooming & it's possible for the rear of the bolt carrier too. Remove bolt carrier to check; push the bolt back with the barrel off, pull out on the center pin of the bolt handle, slide it forward out of the carrier, then the carrier will slide ...

Try : http://gungrip.com/remington-model-8-buttplate.aspx https://vintagegungrips.com/shop/remington-model-8-rifle-buttplate-curved-4-1116-x-1-12/ Bear in mind; these are curved, most are oversize to be sanded to fit the stock. Seldom do you find the metal ones with the toe that has a screw vertical.

Congrats
That's a very clean rifle for the vintage. Got one of the SLRs a year or two older that has little finish left, a good shooter though. My son was impressed at the range.

Just to throw a wrench in the works :o  : Propose a new wildcat; 35 Savage, take a 35Rem barrel, rechamber to the 300 Sav dimensions with the neck blown out to 357 or 358, use 300 Sav bolt, use 300 Sav springs, load for 180-200-220g projectiles. We could create a nice renovation for 35s,...

Re: Bolt rotation
I might add: there is a ridge on the inside left of the receiver that engages the bolt stop while the bolt carrier is between full open & battery. It helps prevent the bolt being rotated from vertical till it seats in the barrel on closing. Still the bolt can be rotated when all the way back. It...

Re: Stuck Bolt: pulled back too far?
Most likely it's because the barrel is not in battery position & installed. The bolt lock lever is released by the barrel in the forward position, with round in the magazine the mag follower does not engage the bolt stop. Try this: install barrel, pull back on bolt handle, push bolt release butt...

A key point is where the looseness is; is it between the barrel jacket & the receiver, or is it between the barrel tube & the jacket block? Another location could be between the barrel nut & the bushing. The location matters: nut/bushing can be fixed with replacements not worn, problems ...

Re: 250 Savage in a Model 8/81 Remington: could this work?
Adam, From personal experience: rifle functioning is a result of momentum. Ie the recoil of the cartridge, if your 250 Sav has the momentum of the 300Sav it will open the bolt and chamber a new round, Wanna bet it's a lower momentum? Most likely the conversion will require cut down recoil, buffer, &...

Adam, Numrich has the bushing, lock, & lock screws. You might also try some of their choke tube spanners. I found some are useful for hook type spanner needs. Getting just the right one can be hit or miss; dimensions on the site are sadly missing. Buy one, if it don't fit, get a different one. A...
