Sir, Some of my 30 Cal. M-8s like slower burning powders . I use 3031 alot for many calibers. It's a very versital powder. If you have any, you might try win 760 or imr 4064. You didn't mention what powder you were using to load your 30 rems. Also what was your overall cartridge length.
My model 8s can be finicky about certain powders and or cartridge length.

Sir,the recoil spring case is probably installed backwards. That would be about the distance difference you have mentioned. Check in John Henwood's book. He addresses this as the most commonly done reassembly issue encountered.
