Re: New Browning A-5 Book
Thanks for the info Dwalt. On a side note Browning is bringing out a shotgun they call the new A5 "humpback". It looks vaguely similar to the original Auto-5 and they are really keying off the name for marketing. Although it's got the name A5 it's not a long recoil design, it's actually a ...

Re: M81 300 Savage Mag Capacity
Yeah it's peculiar, I was looking through some period advertisement and many of them say "magazine capacity is 5 rounds" but they do not refer to a specific caliber. Remington's Model 8 instruction booklet (and the 1912 Motion Picture Booklet) show a capacity of 4 rounds in the magazine fo...

Don't take my word on it, but I think the extra hole in your receiver corresponds to a Redfield 102N receiver sight. Check out the link below...

Re: M81 300 Savage Mag Capacity
Good question!
For calibers 35Rem & 300Sav magazine capacity is - 4 rounds. (although a factory stripper clip will hold 5 rounds you only load 4).
All other calibers hold 5 rounds in the magazine.

Clint,
I'm not a 14/141 guy but I've heard the twist in the magazine tube was to offset the primer from being in line with the nose of the cartridge behind it. So no chance of accidental discharge. Again somebody help me here I'm a 14/141 amateur!?

Layman - The Original Detachable Magazine!
Decades before R. Krieger & Son's began marketing their detachable magazine conversions, Theodore D. Layman filed patent for a one-of-a-kind magazine conversion for the Model 8. This magazine conversion pre-dates any other known conversions. Patent 1,069,339 was filed May 31, 1912 and approved A...

This is the only reference I've seen to a Model 81 with detachable magazine (factory done). Perhaps Remington made up a few 81's for test purposes? With the date of this rifle a few things don't add up. As early as 1935 Remington was already talking about a "Model 82" which was considered ...
