Re: What caliber is best for reloading?

If I were you I'd aim for 35 Rem or 300 Sav. You can find 35 Rem fairly easy, same for 300Sav. Both are still in production, plus 300 Savage can be made by sizing a 308 in the 300 Savage sizer die.
I've bought both new in the last year if it helps.

Nice Inglis too. From the photos the blue looks in great shape, if so I think you got a very fair deal. Most of the cleaner M81s are going for a couple hundred more. I personally prefer the fuller early forearms as well.
By the way, welcome..

A note from the earlier post. I got hoooked on the 35 Rem with the Contender 14" bbl. One of the early ones with a hand lapped factory barrel, A TACK DRIVER in your hand. Just don't put your elbow on the concrete bench top when firing. After the 3rd shot you wonder why your elbow hurts, :( some...

NICE The S curve butt plate is very rare and a factory only item. Beautiful stocks. And you got "C" grade wood at least. Check the serial # on the tang under the stock, if it's got a extra number or a "C" you may have a higher grade rifle. Plus you have more historical info than ...

A pretty stable indeed, I really like the figure on the top 81. 8-) Also looks like a great example of a SLR, it even has the early safety lever. You might consider a folding sight for the barrel jacket, it helps the field of view :geek: when your using the tang sight.

The ND3 is likely a factory repair code. Compare the ser# to the production years you may have a rifle earlier than '35.

CViking, If your going to clean up a blued surface I never use anything but 0000 steel wool and gun oil. Preferably Browning gun oil. Dudes, From a Handloader mag years ago, the nickel has a different metallurgy. Brass will resize a lot easier, the nickel is plated on the outside. This is an interesting dialog. I have some comments: The Model 8 (& by default M81) were designed at the turn of the last century. the concept of high pressure rounds like the 308 was a pipe dream at the time. The components; bolt, barrel, bolt recess in the barrel, springs, and receiver ...

I definitely agree on the cold/heat method. Dry ice from a CO2 extinguisher I have used many times in industry. For heating try a "heat" gun from Harbor Freight, they never last forever, even the expensive ones. The H/G is just like a blow dryer only hotter. Plus they are safer for us than...
