Re: Krieger Detachable Magazines/conversions value
Hey Loren, I think it just depends on the rifle. I don't think there's a set amount of money the Krieger adds to the value. Lot of factors play into it, scope mounts, tapped receivers, recoil pads, etc. An extra magazine like you're talking about certainly adds more value too.

Re: 81 fit and finish
Fit and finish on later production 81's tended to be lackluster compared to earlier rifles. From what i've seen, you wont find a better fit/finish than on the earliest of Model 8's (those that haven't been tampered with). Your rifle looks completely normal. Nice find! The markings are inspector marks.

Re: Need $ values of 8 & 81
Nice group of rifles. Unless there is some form of Remington paperwork there is no way to authenticate a Model 81 in .25Rem. They can be very easily faked and it's happened. What do you mean by verified? If the 4 digit P.O.E. Model 8 you're referring to is the one posted on the other forums (and the...

The clip's tabs should stop at the receiver's stripper clip guides not go inside the receiver. Welcome to the world of 8/81 stripper clips! This allows the clip to pivot as if on a gimbal, making it next to impossible to neatly charge the magazine.

You might check your rifle then, if you have what is pictured you have an authentic M81 stripper clip. They aren't always easy to use but they do work.

Re: Model 8 - No Rules
Welcome to the forum Bruce, I've seen the pictures of your rifle on gunbroker. The barrel assembly (including forearm) are from a Model 81. This is apparent because of the patent roll stamping on the barrel shroud which are Model 81. Now there's a chance the barrel itself is original, but the shroud...

Re: .35 Remington Stripper Clips
There are several variations of 8/81 stripper clips. Your clip sounds like it was made for a Model 81 (being marked .300Sav), but I have never seen any fake copies made with the proper caliber markings...at least not yet. Sometimes clips from Model 30's can be mistaken for 8/81 clips, I believe Pete...

Wes, Your rifle left the factory sometime in 1910. You are correct in that it is a Grade 5 (E grade) rifle. The blue wear looks consistent for a rifle that was used some in its history. I cannot tell by your pictures, is that an old recoil pad fitted to the buttstock? The two biggest detractors to t...

There are a few different extractors Jordy. Early Model 8 extractors for 25, 30, 32 were either unmarked or marked "30", as seen in the picture below. Later 25,30, 32 extractors are sometimes unmarked, this can be confusing because some 35/300sav Model 81 extractors were unmarked as well (...

I hear you. David Chicoine knows what he's doing, you don't want some guy that just says okay I'll reblue it then the rifle comes back with a black color or glossy. There's a difference between "refurbishment" and "restoration" and it's all about the size of your pocketbook.

Re: Re-finishing and Re-bluing
In most cases a restoration of the wood + the metal will cost you more than the value of the rifle, that is if you're looking to do it right and have it look correct. For correct Model 8/81 blue you would want a slow-rust blue. Sometimes you'll see a hot caustic blue and it can look good but it's no...

Just how prone are these things to breaking That's all relative really. Depends on how much use or abuse the rifle has had, how well it was taken care of, etc. There are a few differences, more so with very early 8's but late production 8's are near identical to 81's apart from appearance. IMO, recoil pads do decrease value, if your stock hasn't been cut you can find an original 81 buttplate and replace it.

Remington did not make a "left handed" Model 8 or 81 to my knowledge. Just as easy for someone to have a stock made for a left handed shooter though. Look in the picture gallery under "not so greats" and you'll see one gunsmith's handiwork at creating an ambidextrous safety!
