Re: Model 81 in .300 Savage, 1945
That's a pretty gun....I like the wood. I fully intend to get 81's in both .300 Savage and .35 Remington for deer hunting. If I ever have the funds for a guided hunt, I'll take those along. Later, I hope to find nice model 8's in .25, .32, and .35. Congrats on your find. www.ammoseek.com has plenty ...

Re: Anyone hunt deer with the .25 Remington?
Really now? You've just tickled my "challenge accepted" button! If and when I have the chance to hunt grizzly I will endeavor to do so with a Model 8 or 81 in .35 Remington. If successful, news will be posted here. I will send you the bear rug. 8-) Now...off to buy a lottery ticket so that...

Re: Anyone hunt deer with the .25 Remington?
My impression is that "back in the day" people were hunting game with calibers which we now would consider to be inadequate. Today, we expect to kill an animal with one shot, often from some kind of stand. The whole idea of the Model 8 was 4 or 5 fast shots. I have seen several references...

Re: Anyone hunt deer with the .25 Remington?
These are great replies and I love this sort of information. There was a Model 8 in .25 Remington on gunbroker last week. It looked pretty good and sold for around $900.00. It didn't have the original buttplate, IIRC. I thought about going for it but I want to get Model 81's in .35 Remington and .30...

I am just curious how effective this round is. What was .25 Rem meant for anyway?

I'm OK with the cost as I think a good scope just has that sort of price.
Can you link me to any 1" scopes that are illuminated and would do well with the Model 81?

I've learned the hard way that it's better to pay up front than out back....I try to avoid beat up guns since I am not a craftsman or 'smith. I do buy beat up guns if it's only cosmetic and I intend to carry, hunt with, or use those for home defense. In such roles, they are bound to take their share...

Only 20K Canadian? POCKET CHANGE in this economy! I once thought about getting a .50 BMG (AR 50 single shot) because I was in something of an "arms race" with a friend. He had gotten a .300 Weatherby, .338 Win Mag, & a .375 H&H, so naturally I wanted to beat him. 8-) I actual...

1 inch scope question
So I have ordered a scope mount with 1 inch rings for a Model 8/81 from a member here. I also realize a lot of deer kills happen late in the day or under overcast skies.....I'd like an illuminated reticle. Is there a quality scope maker (Nikon, Leupold, etc.) that makes a 4x or 6x rifle scope, illum...

Re: Remington spanner wrench Project ** pic heavy
I had just noticed the spanner wrench for sale on gunbroker.
If someone did produce a tool such as the last one on here "the ultimate spanner tool" I would buy one. I would pay up to $200.00 for such a quality tool, IF it was really that high of quality and precise fit.

Are there 1 inch rings for this mount?
So a friend has this rifle and wants to know if there are 1" rings available for it. Anyone know of any? Is this mount too far forward for a modern 4x or 6x scope, preferrably illuminated reticle like a Leuopold? Thanks. http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t544/SKIandSKY/WeirdModel81ScopeMountB...

If I ever amount to anything, ALL of my guns: for show, hunting, and daily carry will look like this.
I wonder how many of these have ended up crushed in gun buy back programs? No wait, too evil a thought! Forget I mentioned it.

Don't sell your guns at a pawn shop unless you have become a meth addict and already lost all your teeth. I'd sell the pistol online as you'll get more for it or hang onto and save up. Selling it to a friend is a good move too. Lowered to $500.00 eh? I'm no haggler but I'd go back in there and...

Are 3/4 inch scopes even made today?
I keep seeing ads for Model 8's with scope mounts (which is encouraging) but all seem to be 3/4 inch scope rings. Are 3/4 inch scopes even made today?
I'd want a 4x or 6x fixed power scope with reticle illumination for those early mornings/late in the day shots.

Re: What caliber is best for reloading?
That's what I was assuming, .35 Remington and .300 Savage are the way for a beginner to go.
Is Lee a good maker? Is Lee stuff available?
I might try to go and make .300 Savage from 30-06 cases due to the ammo shortage right now.

Re: New member, just bought an 81.
Two great looking guns. I like the 81 better I think (or better said) I think I would like the 81 better since it has more of a pistol grip stock. I like fuller forearms too. I think I'll hold off on getting a rifle for now unless I come across a killer deal. My income is about to hit a bottleneck (...

What caliber is best for reloading?
What is best to reload? I assume I may need to resize an existing (and more common) case.
.30 Remington
.300 Savage
.32 Remington
I am totally new to all of this but I really like this rifle and I realize reloading is to be expected here, especially in the "ammo shortage."

Re: Serial # 59 for sale
I have been burned on two GB auctions. One K98 came with so bad a bore it keyholed at 7 yards (I am not joking). The last muzzleloader I got on there had a very rusted bore and the seller at first offered a partial refund (after stating by email "the bore is perfect") then backed out on th...

About 2006 I realized I had become a sucker for nice wood. I began buying guns in part or because of wood looks. This gun has that for sure. People aren't watermelons and most attackers are on drugs. Most everything I have read (and pros in the field I have spoken with) feel that 38 Special and 9mm Parabellum are the minimum capable of having enough penetration to reach the vital organs with much regularity. Even then, they are not alway...

Hi, I'm In The Ten Ring and I have really come to love these rifles in about the space of 2 weeks. I first saw one in a gun shop about the spring of 2008 but had no idea what it was. I think it was an 81 but I didn't know enough to be interested then. Looking back, I should have gotten it. It was in...
