Grandaughter and Vintage Remington

Well, at least one of the Remington vintagae rifles we were hunting with today made meat. My grandaughter shot this Nebraska buck this morning with her new/old Model 722 in .300 Savage. :D Grandpa was armed with his Model 81 in the same caliber but didn't get a shot this time around. http://i...

Here is what you are looking for. I found this one on e-bay but have also picked another up from one of the listers here. Start looking they are out there. Called a rear sight blank. You use the two mounting screws from the rear sight assembly and the blank takes up the space, its rounded on one sid...

You might have seen my posting today for the latest test on my .300 Sav M81 - 2" to 2.5" @50 yards, 5-shot group, open sights. I think it might perform better if I had a peep sight, but I don't. My eyes are no longer good enough to use open sights effectively, but I do OK with peeps. The ...

Keep checking on e-bay and Gun Broker, they come around fairly often. Expect to pay $150-225 for the tang sights. Rear blanks are much harder to come by and usually run around $25-50.

If you have a lathe so that you can turn your own slightly oversized pin, that's the way to go. I've not done that on an 8/81 jacket, but have done it many times on other guns with sloppy pin holes. I found an older post from about this time last year from a gent who had the same problem with an M8 in 35Rem. Seems it was caused by the shoulder of the cases being set back a bit too far. Give her a good cleaning and some lubrication and go from there. These old guns can be very gummed up with old oil and powder fouling. In the process you can check for any obvious worn, broken or missing parts. Not uncommon to find some things assembled improperly as well.
