Love the Ohio BAR's! Super cool.

But, like you, I tend to think long-recoil 8's and 81's are even cooler :D :D

Cam - any info on these hard rubber butt plates, dates of use, etc.?
The hard rubber (vulcanite) butt plates were used from the beginning of production to at least during WWI...maybe longer. Steel butt plates were mixed in there too but the earliest guns all have the hard rubber plates.

Dad's selling a few things, here's a new old stock Model 81 forearm in the original Remington/Dupont packaging. Feel free to share the link with anyone that might be interested. Details: Flat-side forearm found on Model 81's from 1940-1950. BEAUTIFUL! Never been on a rifle. http://ebay.us/pQB9pB?cmp...

I would rule out this being the product of your factory repair code. It's just not in line with period Remington repair work.

But I also don't know the reasoning behind this :?:

You're off to a great start rcranch! If you can acquire an original 15 round magazine, you've got a $5000-7000+ rifle on your hands. Although this rifle is indeed in the LA County serial number database, I had never seen photos of it before so THANK YOU! Although LA County purchased 199 of the Remin...

It's possible the seller saw one of the inspector/fitter stamps of "F" on the bottom of the rifle and assumed that meant "F" grade. Have come across that misconception several times.

Re: Repair date vs manufacture date - Please help

Date codes were not present on rifles prior to 1921. So...

If yours is indeed stamped "PN" then your rifle was manufactured June, 1922. And subsequently repaired on the date you indicated via the repair code.

When present always date the rifles via the date code.

Re: What year did they start putting tang sights on Model 8's?

I would say from the very beginning, at least evidence would support Remington's intention there. This by the pre-drilled & tapped tang screw found on the very earliest of rifles from 1906. Peeps were always factory options.

You don't see this very often. A brand new, old stock, never-been-on-a-rifle Remington Model 81 forearm. With original Remington packaging!

I don't know the year of mfg, but sometime between 1940-1950.

Methinks someone has replaced the barrel jacket with one from a model 8. Good eyes Bandersnatch! So the rear sight maybe, but I don't think barrel assemblies between 8/81's and FN 1900's are interchangeable. The receivers are recessed differently for the takedown screw and jacket head. MichiganModel8 welcome!

I'd suspect the repairs covered a wide range of mechanical issues. With no specifics given w/ a repair code it's hard to know, unless there's obvious evidence of parts replacement. I've seen barrels changed, barrel jackets, etc.

Good looking springpole you got there!
