Those screws do have a tendency to strip due to misalignment on reassembly. The tang is sprung somewhat and makes it difficult to get it to line up straight. Interesting issue. I would wonder if possible the pin is missing or sheared off and the jacket is actually a turn or two out allowing for it to move in and out. Seems hard for it to do that as the threads on the head and jacket are very fine. I will be interested in hearing what you find.

Just for general information I have a cast bullet load I use in my Marlin lever gun for cowboy silhouette work. Its an RCBS 200 grain flat point gas check cast from wheel weights. Can't believe that its been quite a few months since the last time I shot my Model 8 35 Rem. Put forty rounds through it using hand loads with 200 and 225 grain SPs. I loaded these some time back and decided to see how the old girl was shooting. Averaged about 3.5" at 100 yards with both loads....

Sorry guys but I cant say as to fitting a spring to the older M8. I have left mine as is with out any issues and dont recall anyone one talking about adding a buffer or recoil spring to one. Maybe someone with knowledge on this may comment.

No, its one I bought to use for my Hawkin muzzle loader many years ago. Can't even remember who the maker was. It has come in handy for use with my 1895 Winchester and the Model 8 and 81's. No need to modify the gun and comes in handy getting into the tree stand and such.
