Re: Scopes for the 8 and 81
This was sent to me from fellow 8/81 collector Tom Ramsey. It is Bill Hillis's Model 8F that as you can see used a special scope mounting system that did not require drilling/tapping of the receiver. If anyone has information about this make of scope mounting system I would greatly appreciate anythi...

Factory Checkering?
Since we're coming out with a page on the various grades of the 8 and 81, here's an interesting rifle. It's an early 4 digit Model 81 (mfg. 1939) with what might appear to be factory checkering. The wood has no interior markings but was advertised as a deluxe Model 81. Look carefully at the grip che...

Re: Second M81 Today
I'll have a peek in my parts stash. Keep in mind if you do find a replacement ideally you need one with notches that match the number of teeth on your barrel nut. There were several barrel nuts and washers made. You can interchange them but they will not hold the nut tight indefinitely as they were ...

Re: Second M81 Today
Dwalt, Should someone be using a reproduction spanner wrench the barrel nut should be loosened but not removed. The barrel nut acts as a guide for the spanner end as you loosen the bushing. If you removed the barrel nut completely then started in on the bushing you would have no guide and the spanne...

Mark, from the pictures here as well as the ones you emailed, your rifle is pretty cool. The barrel jacket markings are like you mentioned, but I really like your buttplate. John Henwood coined it the "semi-military" version with a curved heel and toe, it's quite uncommon. You have a nice ...

Alan, The following is one of the most common factory checkering patterns for Model 8's both on checkered A grades and C grades. Some C grades (like the Pre-WWI rifle in the website banner at the top of the page) have slightly more elaborate patterns. And just because it's got factory checkering doe...

Alan,
The majority of checkering encountered is not factory done. Sometimes if you remove the forearm (or stock) and see a "3" stamped in the wood this would indicate a "C" grade. Best of luck with the rifle, thanks for visiting our site!

Alan, We're glad to have you. Hearing you ask about "what grade is my rifle" is good to hear because we're working on that very page to help inform owners. From your serial number your rifle was most likely manufactured in early 1909, the circle P is just an assembler/fitter mark. We would...

Great observations and thinking superc! I like the insight you bring here. I've been thinking a page titled "what grade is my rifle?" or "Model 8 & 81 rifle grades" is the best. That way we can show with photographs what makes each grade unique and include everything from A grade to F grade. If we do it, the page would of course identify checkering ...

Great rifle SuperC! I only wish they still cost $80! "I would have loved to have seen a lighter version with a thiner stock and a 16 inch barrel" Pete Verschneider built a few 17" carbines, one of which you can find at the link below. An overall length of 35" it's a real thumper!...

Re: Question Regarding Original Configuration Buttplates
Nitroman, As far as I can tell, the caliber doesn't have anything to do with the buttplate. The buttplates you find on the Model 8 probably have more to do with the year the rifle was manufactured more than anything else. The first few years of production nearly all Model 8s had the hard rubber butt...

oldtimehockey,
You're absolutely correct. The big part of additional information would come from examination of existing rifles; looking for differences in production across the serial numbers. As far as the history goes, I don't know much has been added since John Henwood's book.

The clips in 1906 cost .10 cents each. I used an inflation calculator and that's roughly $2.70 today. I wonder if you could still buy them for that price if they'd be a little more practical, lol.

I think to understand you have to put your mindset back in 1906. Three years prior the U.S. had just adopted the stripper clip fed 03 Springfield. I'm sure the proven nature of this platform added to the market appeal of the Remington Autoloader. That's just my guess, it was a system that was alread...
