Yooper, from the pics you posted I can't see any engraved caliber marking on the barrel jacket extension. Henwoo d in his book stops short of saying that the only caliber that's engraved is 35 rem. I failed to mention the serial # of my rem. M-8 is 73 x so yours is slightly earlier than mine. I honestly don't know why yours wouldn't have an engraved caliber marking too. Maybe someone else on this forum can shed some light on this question. Thanks,

I would start w/imr4064 for 180 gr. Bullets,or 165 gr. Bullets. I would start w/ I Mr 4895 for 150 gr. Bullets.I've had ggood success w/ hornady 160 gr. Ftx bullets @ 4064 powder also. I understand your pesimism. It does seem counter-productive. But that truly was their sales pitch,and they were called flexible peep sights. However ,I own 3 or 4 marbles tang peep sights,and i've never no tied any significant change in accuracy when moving those units.

It has more to do with the cartridge brass it self. Remember JM Browning designed that round to work specifically with The Rem. M-8 in 1900 or so. Smokeless powder was still very new.
