Model 8 - Back fom the dead!
I'm posting this for Philip Gilbert who wanted to share his Model 8 story with you guys... I was working in a scrap yard when I found half of what I thought was a military rifle from the early 1900's. I was estimating it was used from 1900 or 1910 to 1930, as I recognized the magazine from some pict...

Re: Newbie here
John, From the information provided, it sounds like your rifle's receiver and barrel assembly are from two different guns. The magazines on factory Model 8's are not removable. It must be loaded either by individual cartridges by hand through the top of the receiver or via stripper clips which are g...

Not mine, just came across it: EBay #150509752721 NIB Not a tang but receiver sight, no drilling necessary, has the mounting screw - they don't come any nicer then this; plus the guy is sortof local to you, Turner, ME. I actually prefer this style over the tang. I believe Redfield's require 1 addit...

Re: barrel jacket/adapter is loose
uhjohnson, that's because many parts breakdown's (including some of Remington's & the one on this website) listed the barrel jacket as one part. But you are correct, the "barrel jacket" includes both the barrel jacket and the barrel jacket head. This also applies to the "barrel&qu...

Re: need some help identifying a few 1907 model 8 parts
The repair code tell us that whatever happened, that rifle was wearing that later barrel jacket when it left Remington in Dec. 1932. In some cases, like this one, you see later mfg parts on an earlier rifle which suggest those parts were replaced. If you find a rifle w/ mismatched receiver and barre...

Re: ID a 1907 w 1911 date
Making an assumption (out of me): I'm suggesting that during the factory repair XA3 (December 1932), this jacket/shroud was replaced on this rifle by the factory with an in-stock “period correct” new jacket that just happen to have an unusual inscription rool mark combining the 1911 date with the o...

my pleasure RF. The serial number should be the #24 where you indicated stamped on the bottom of the receiver just forward of the magazine. Sometimes you'll find a matching number stamped on the barrel jacket underneath the forearm, sometimes not. If you remove the buttstock you may also find a seri...

Not sure what all you're asking exactly. I can tell you that the "XA3" indicates a factory repair performed in December 1932.

yeah sorry I misunderstood. The takedown lever can become set pretty tight. I'd treat it like trying to remove any rusty screw. Just don't try and force that takedown lever as it can bend.

Re: old guy; new discovery
Rockfish, If there is a "24" on the bottom of the receiver just forward of the magazine I think you have Model 8 # 24. The 1st style safety lever and the location of the caliber engraving indicates this is a very early gun as well. That's the earliest I've ever heard of. I would love to se...

81 Special Police Magazine question
I purchased a lot of magazines and am trying to determine some history on a few pieces. These are from the William B Edwards collection, does anyone know who he was? I believe he may be the Colt/Civil War book author. Listed below are some of the tags on the magazine packages. One mentions Sam Cummi...

I do have a 5 round magazine patterned after a Krieger (side springs riveted) made by Pete Verschneider that we would sell. Some light fitting may be required. The magazine is in great condition complete. Email me if interested.

they could have come new with factory installed sights yes. There is no real way to know if it was installed by Remigton or after it left the factory.

my suggestion would be to forget the rear sight. Use a flip Lyman or Marbles tang sight and have your front sight base reinstalled with a high post front sight.

The book is a must have for collectors.
The barrel jacket looks to be original, yes many older guns had their serial number handstamped on the bottom of the barrel jacket head (some were on the side under the forearm).
Rear sling swivel is not a factory one.

This was a fantastic buy on a unique rare gun. The rifle has the Special Police forearm too. I've see another Special Police w/out the extended magazine and I'm starting to wonder if it was optional because this no doubt is the real deal. I can't tell if the magazine has been tampered with and is or...

If you have an extra magazine assembly around you might try swapping and trying that. Doesn't take too much misalignment to have feeding problems, are your side springs still good?

the wood looks as if it has been slightly sanded and refinished. This is evidenced as Jack pointed out, and by the seller, by the wood a little low at the tang. Also, the forearm where it angles out (beavertail) does not retain it's sharp edge like it once had. Sling swivels are aftermarket. The met...

The standard grade 81's or "A" grade, will have plain American walnut. Checkering does not necessarily denote a higher grade. However, most checkering you see is not factory and VERY few "A" grades have factory checkering. The next grade up of 81 was called the "C" grad...

Just a model 8 with the serial number ground down and a new one stamped. Not the first I've seen, certainly not the last. Why was this done? I have no clue, but I doubt it's some prototype firearm.
Looks like it went for a decent price anyways.

I reckon if factory ammo was too hot they wouldn't have kept mfg it for 10 years. I think the .300Sav was the near the limit for this action. No problems that I know of, I recommend 180gr. factory ammo. That's what I shoot in mine. Good luck!
