Very nice! I've always had a special attraction to the graceful turn of the pistol grip on the 81. What caliber are your guns chambered in?

What other cartridges?

I have a question, that has something of a speculative nature. Considering the limitations of the action of the Remington 8 and 81, for what other cartridges COULD and SHOULD the Remington 8 and 81 been chambered for? It appears the limit for the power of the cartridge used was reached with the .300...

Did the pawn shop have the gun properly identified? i.e. did they know what they had? If they did have it properly identified, was it commensurately priced? Gee, I wish I ran into stuff like that at my local pawnshop.

Well, I think you should wait until your .35 Carcano is complete before you choose which of your oddball guns to sell. That way, you get to see how the project gun turns out and if it is really worth getting rid of a gun you might actually prefer to the new project. Just my 2 cents. Generally speaki...

I think that in the Remington 8 in .25, .30 and .32 the magazine was designed to hold 5 cartridges (that last one is always a bugger). In the Remington Model 8 in .35, the magazine was designed to hold 4 cartridges.

Just my personal opinion, but I wouldn't be able to pay $750 for that gun. It's not 95-99% condition. The stock has been refinished. I love the flat bottom pistol grip stock...but not that much. I've never heard of a left handed Model 8. What I have seen in the past that I really like is a gunsmith who can fix a cracked wrist with a wooden "pin". Looks a lot better than a nail or screw. I do not know anyone who does that kind of work. Maybe Eric Hutchins in Maine.

Re: Serial numbers and production dates

I would imagine that, considering that civilian arms production in Belgium was probably nil between 1914 and 1918, your gun was probably made pre-WWI (1914 or earlier). That does not mean it wasn't sold later, say in 1919 or 1920.

This doesn't exactly speak to your question, but it may possibly give you some kind of idea. According to the article, La Carabine Automatique de Chasse Browning, by Michel Druart, in the Belgian French language magazine "Fire", between 1910 and 1921 FN made 2909 Model 1900s. Between 1921 ...
