Re: Unless ......

I am in the "Gotta Shoot Em" camp. Collecting for the sake of keeping fine examples of the "real thing" for future generations to see and admire is fine too just not for me. If I buy it and dont shoot it then it gets traded for something else I will. I like mine experienced so I ...

Found Another Old 81'

Well, I guess the hook is set. I just sent off the check for my second Model 81. This one is in .300 Savage and is not drilled for a scope. My first one was and a good thing too as I cant see the standard sights well enough to shoot as good as I can. This is why I decided that if I were to get anoth...

Re: Lead Bullets and Heavy Bullets in the .30 Rem Model 81

Thanks for the write up! I cast and shoot far more CB's than jacketed. Mostly in large caliber single shot rifles like the Remington roller and Sharps using black powder. So any rifle I shoot will sooner or later see some cast slugs. Your work with the .30 Rem M81 will come in handy when I get to tr...

Gun Show Find Today

Went to a local gun show not expecting to find much. No M8's or M81's were there. Walked by a table that one of the better local gun smiths sometimes has if the show is big enough. I was looking throug several little glass topped display boxes that contained old varnier tang sights and such and said...

There is an 81 with this mount on it on GB right now. Of course it is not for sale with out the rifle but at least I now know what a Stith mount is and looks like. Very diffrent approach indeed! I have seen two other rifles that were tapped for this type of mount and had wondered juat what the holes...

Re: Local Gun Show

I was at a large gun show yesterday in Kansas City, KS. We found three 8's and four 81's on the racks. The dealers were fairly knowledgable about the guns and I thought the asking prices were well above the amount I would be willing to pay. Of course I didnt really deal on any of them as my "co...

Re: Found an old 81

I found an old Weaver K 2.5 on GB and took a chance. It turned out to be in pretty good shape and I got it mounted to the rifle. I had to do a "Bubba Fix" on the Weaver mount base to repair a stripped hole. The proper six screw pattern #4 base has not been made for years and I haven...

Mine sent all of them just behind me a bit to the right. Other than that it behaved much the same. Easy on the brass and really pretty tame considering al...

Re: Reloading for 30 Remington.

I use Hornadys 150 grain RN #3035 .308" that is made for the 30-30 Win. They have an exposed lead nose and a crimping groove. You can get them most anywhere bullets are sold. I buy mine at either Scheels or Cabelas. I have the same issue as you with buckhorn style sights. The shorter the sight ...

Re: Reloading for 30 Remington.

Like you I am just getting started on the .30Rem. I am going to stick with 150 grain Hornady RN and BLC(2) powder. I have had good luck with this combination in 30-30 lever guns in the past. So far I have only test shot my 31 Woodsmaster with the open sights to be sure it was going to function OK. T...

Re: Ready For First Trip To The Range

The pic really is deceving. When I insert all five rounds there is enough room in the mag. It must be the angle I took it from. That and the cartridge sitting on the floor plate of the mag as a single round its not fully seated back in the clips. Another item too, the new Remiongton cases are pretty...

Re: Ready For First Trip To The Range

They are out at the limit but I can get five into and out of the mag OK. Most published OAL's I found were listed at 2.525" as you noted. The ones I have vary some due to the exposed lead tips on the bullets and run between 2.535" and 2.570" but seem to work OK. I will see if things a...

Great replies to the OP's questions guys. Wildgoose, Your Weaver brand scope mount is was one of the best for the 8/81's. If i'm not mistaken its base uses 6 mounting holes in the receiver. I think I have it just about as far apart as I am going to go on the reciever end. No broken parts or really badly worn ones. Absolutly does sir. I was just wondering if your comment was based on collector value and the desire to see straight examples of the original guns still available. Or, if it was possibly that some issue with the safefy or function on the gun may result. If I were to come into posession of a complete...

Noted a comment you made in relation to the value of an FN1900. You commented that having a rifle that has had the reciever drilled and taped for a scope mount is never a good thing. If you get a chance could you expand on why you feel that is the case? I have seen several guns in my research that h...
