I would not try to drill a hole in barrel jacket and suggest replacing forearm removal screw with same thread sling swivel for use in field and keeping original screw in place during storage. Another option would be to find new barrel jacket to use with sling.

Rem81auto's view is on target, the high sides curving partly over the top do create sort of a modified rear sight yet leaves enough open as infuncity says to see more target. Digressing a little from the question, a peep sight this far down the barrel is hard to use without crawling up the stock.
