Standard Arms Model G project
I have a Standard Arms Model G rifle in .30 Remington which is substantially complete (as far as I can tell) but is in non-operating condition. I had intended to fix it myself but never got around to it. The ladder on the rear sight is missing. The gas valve seems to be a little buggered up. The act...

I know I have struggled several times with the refinish vs leave original conundrum. In the final analysis, I would do what makes the gun most enjoyable to you. It's not like you would be refinishing some super rare variation or a one of a kind gun or one that is historically significant that would ...

Re: British proof marks on Model 8?
The production code, "RT" indicates it was made in November 1926. According to John Henwood's book, "The Great Remington 8" though, the last rifle shipped from the factory in 1918 was 40,917 and in 1919 was 42,009, which puts your rifle 41033 shipped from the factory in 1919. I found a list of guns used by a hunting party of the Prince of Wales in India in 1921. Thought it was mildly interesting because of reference to two of our favorite firearms. Apparently the "Royals" were intrigued with the Remington Autoloader and took it "shooting". Imagine some guy in a sun helme...

#26213 was probably manufactured sometime in 1911 as the last gun shipped from the factory that year was #26489.

Welcome to the forum! I think Remington pretty much shut down civilian production in 1942. I know the auto makers stopped making cars that same year. The .35 and .300 were 4 round magazines.

You can't use .25-35 WCF or the European equivalent (6.5x52R) in the Model 8 because, for one thing, it's a rimmed cartridge. .25-35 Remington is the same as .25 Remington.

Thank you. That's very interesting information. The think I worry about a little with the Model 8 and 81 ( it being a recoil operated gun) is the pressure.

Anyone been able to do a 7-30 Waters Rimless conversion on a Model 8 or 81? I would think 120 grain bullet at 2500 fps out of a Autoloader would be a fine goal.

Good to have you on the forum. If your gun has little or no original blue left, then in my opinion it is totally up to you as to whether or not it should be re-blued. It all depends on what you would like best. If it's really rough looking now, you may actually improve value a little if you re-blue ...

To begin, I paraphrase a wiser man than I. You are dealing with a 100 year old firearm. One designed to operate with ammunition developing a specific pressure to provide the recoil forces which operate the action. Plus it's a complicated gun with lots of small parts and flat springs susceptible to b...

What to look for on a Model 81 made in 1936? First consideration is condition. Overall condition...bluing should be that shinier blue that was used before 1942 rather than the duller blue you see on guns from the end of production. Bolt and bolt handle should not be blued. If you've seen a bunch of ...
