Re: 7.62x39......Part Deux, w/pics of my "new" .35 Remington

Congrats on your new-to-you Model 8. :D Rifle looks in good condition. Wood has been sanded but it's tastefully refinished. A replacement buttplate can be found but you may need to watch and wait on sites like ebay and gunbroker. The receiver mounted sight appears to be a Williams. The rear sight on...

I've got this rifle for sale on another forum, but since its "vintage" maybe some of y'all or someone you know may be interested. A fine rifle.

Re: safety lever w/screw

The safety w/ screw was a gradual introduction, starting in early 1928 (according to Henwood). This safety and the previous style w/out screw were used concurrently in production however, as you'll find late production 8's and Model 81's with both.

Re: 7.62x39......is the idea still alive & kicking?

I'd recommend trying to match the weight of an original 8/81 barrel! Perhaps one type or grade of steel at the same length and same diameter carries the same weight...but then again maybe not. Also the contour/profile is very important with the barrel literally recoiling between parts. If you've got...

Re: researching the history behind Remington gun markings

Word on the street is, each inspector had his own unique stamp and these inspectors/fitters may have been paid per each part they evaluated & stamped. Another interesting observation is the "tidiness" of how these stamps were applied. If you look at the earliest of guns, like 1906 guns, the stamps w...

Hey Craig,

All your assumptions are correct. Original magazines, when found, carry astronomical prices. And there are no modern reproductions.

The most recent 15 round magazine at auction was last month, sold for $1625.00

It would be an interesting venture. Key would be having a cartridge to operate below the maximum chamber pressures of the cartridges of the time. You wouldn't want to hot-rod these old actions!

I haven't researched them, but 7.62x39 and 6.8SPC would be cool

Great words there Phyrbird ... or as our good friend Jim Woods (RIP) used to say firbird :o  ;) I can't add much to Carl's great response, other than a small company in the 1950's (I think) did conversions of 8/81's to 250-3000 Savage. They were nice, almost factory looking. But not popular, ...

Hey Cptn Jack, sights for the 8/81 are just like any other period firearm. Factory rear sights are elevation adjustable, and dovetailed front sights windage adjustable. Just be careful if you decide to drift the front sight you don't want to break off the sight block from the jacket head!

Hey Halygon,

The closer picture does help. It may not have been welded, but the tab/post does appear to have been replaced and/or repaired. It's not a big deal at all, especially if the rifle feeds and functions OK

You're right, it's the triangular shaped spring steel on the side of the magazine. They have a tab that inserts into a hole in the magazine right where yours appears welded. The tab broke at some point but it's not a terribly uncommon repair. Just saying replacements are out there if you had the not...
