Looks relatively OK ,but the buttplate may have been changed. Blueing also looks suspect to me,but it may just be the lighting @camera used. I've been finishing wood my whole life. There are hundreds of methods. I start w/ 180 grit paper. Move to 220 ,then 4-0000# steel wool take your time if its worth doing, its worth doing right. Some then apply wood grain filler. But I've nver liked my results w/ that stuff. I instead like to build my...

Cam-do you know if those repro buttplates have the earliest address like your photo example? Or do they say rem/umc? I talked to a parts guy who says he has a mold to make the first ones but wants alot to make some up. Minimum ten or more at 30$ each.----Roger

Lil bill, I have mostly m-8 s ,but I do own 7 -m81 s@ have sold 2 that I wish I had back. None of them had sling swivels for a sling strap--- hope that helps you. Its just a small sample but its all I know about it.----Roger

I also have a 25/35 rem m-8. Mine is in the 17000 serial range. It came from a working ranch in idaho. Your serial number puts yours near the end of that marking I believe.
