Granpa's Model 8

He would supplement his income with furs. When the 81 goes out to range on occasion, I think of him.

Peerless Grade Model 8 for sale

Augusta, Georgia Southeast Armory. Absolutely gorgeous Peerless Grade Model 8 for sale. 1929 mfg. Asking $3500 (They also have a very nice Model 14) I have no connection to the business. I would post some pics but I can't figure out how to do it. First time I have ever seen one in person and it is s...

Nice! Also, you are a braver...and smarter man than I! I haven't dared to take mine apart. If I did, it might not ever get back together correctly! Probably have a box of parts left over...

Long Range Targetry

After sitting in the safe for 5 years, finally unlimbered the Model 81-300 again and hit steel at 200 and 420 yards with the rear peep/front bead sight. Aim point was centered on the target with calm winds negating any hold. Very satisfying results. Plan on taking it out again soon.

Wow, that's neat! Does the take-down affect accuracy? Any play/wobble in the link-up?

Bonnie and Clyde display

Went to Charlotte, NC gun show last weekend and there was a Bonnie and Clyde display. Many types of firearms used by both the Law and the criminals. One of the Model 8's had a neat custom extended magazine. No pictures allowed otherwise would have posted. It sure was neat.

One 8(?) spotted for sale

The Gander Mountain in Gastonia, NC had what at passing glance is a Model 8. Did not have time to look at price/condition/caliber, etc.

3 81's spotted for sale...

The brand new Gander Mountain in Monroe, NC along Hwy 74 had 3 Model 81's in the used gun section a few days ago. One may even have been a Model 8. Only a passing glance; caliber and condition unknown.

Re: Found Another Old 81'

Thanks. I am curious to at least see a barrel assembly taken apart. It doesn't have to be mine. I wonder how long the barrel and receiver springs can go before they need replacing?

Re: Found Another Old 81'

Is there a good manual on how to dis-assemble? Maybe a youtube video? I need to take mine apart and clean it. Is it possible to take apart the barrel assembly?
I shot mine last week after letting it set for awhile. What a hoot.

Re: Speculation:What if the US Military had adopted the Model 8?

Wasn't some evidence of Model 8's used by some of the European militarys? If an autoloader would have been used in large numbers in WW1, I wonder if that would have spurred on other countries to investigate them earlier-and then perhaps the US would have been opposed by them in WW2? Or could a Model...

Speculation:What if the US Military had adopted the Model 8?

Is it possible to imagine what may have been if the US Military had adopted the Model 8 and we had used it in WW1? Or for that matter, adopted it instead of the Garand?

Here's another article(s) by Layne Simpson. It's interesting he mentions he dislikes autoloaders but ironically his all time favorite rifle is a Model 81!

I sure plan on it just as soon as I can get out! Like you, I also plan on taking a 1903, probably a 1903A3 but am considering a 1903.
Will post a range report when complete.

Re: Charger clips

Thanks for the replies, I'll check them out. Mine is 300Savage. I was prepared to take anything I could get but I wanted a 300 or the 35 for best ballistics/power. I'm not sure which caliber grandpa had but I would bet is one of the lighter ones. He was always a Remington man! I read the 300 was the...

I for one would be intereste in such information. Specifically the major and perhaps only? competitor to the Model 8, ie, the Winchester Self Loading rifles. I would like to more know about how they compare(d) and how/why the Remington dominated. I suppose the Remington earned its success and its fe...

Charger clips

I just picked up a Model 81 and sure am pleased with it. My Grandpa used to have one and I had to have one also. I have searched for years and now finally found it! Mine was made summer 1946. I would like to know where I can find the charger clips(aka "stripper clips") used to reload the M...
