Re: Rem 81 barrel nut, how tight?

I usually run mine down until their just snug, If your barrel nut washer has teeth cut on both sides you might try turning it over and see if the the teeth on the nut and washer come a little closer to meshing.

Re: Late 40s factory recoil pad?

Howdy Folks After much hemming and hawing I finally decided the closest thing currently available to a 1948 factory pad would be the Pachmyr F250 in brown with a white stripe, I felt a little stronger about this after I saw the F grade m8 in the classifieds, The pad on it is identical to the pad I h...

Re: Rem. 8 Carbine

That would be an easy conversion using photoshop but you need to use a police special with the 15 rd. magazine to start with, Talk about an early assault rifle. I dont think it would be totaly impossible as a real world project. The barrel shroud would have to be detached from the receiver extension...

Re: Rem. 8 Carbine

I'm sitting here considering the work that went into that, The barrel shroud would'nt be too hard but then the barrel would have to be turned with the extension attached (Not easy)to remove or reduce the taper then threaded and splined for the barrel nut & washer. Definatly the work of a pro. It...

Re: Late 40s factory recoil pad?

I went back and looked at the pictures again, It looks pretty much like what they still make.
Brown, Black stripe and Ventilated, It looks like this is going to be easier than I thought.
Thanks again

Re: Late 40s factory recoil pad?

Thanks Rich I've had the Midway catalog out looking at the Pachmayr pads, lots of choices . What color is the Pachmayr on your 81, I'm assuming it's a ventilated type with a white line. I keep thinking of red pads but I think i'm getting the later 40s early 50s pads confused with the old Hawkins pad...

Re: Late 40s factory recoil pad?

Thanks Rich I talked again to the guy I bought the gun from and he said the old pad was redish brown and just a generic period pad, I think your browning pad is probally pretty close. I hit a lot of swapmeets and dig thru the junk boxes at gun shows so I should be able to come up with something appr...

Late 40s factory recoil pad?

Howdy All I'm in the process of getting a 81 in 300 Savage up and running and I've run into a problem with the Butt plate or recoil pad. According to John Henwoods book all 81s had a 13 3/4" length of pull, The length of pull on this rifle is 13 1/4" which makes me think it was cut, But I'...

Re: To shoot or not to shoot???

Absolutly, They were made to be fired. I use hand loads that I work up for each rifle, My loads are just strong enough to function properly in the rifle, I also only use cast bullets with gas checks which I feel are easier on the bore. I had two 8s in 30 Rem. one rifle was made in 1924 and the other...

Re: Favorite Model 8 caliber ?

Well I guess I can jump in here !. So far I think my favorite is the .30 Remington the sole reason for this is I can get five rounds in the magazine of my model 8 which is great since most stages of our Wild Bunch matches only require five shots, So no reloading. I like my Mdl 8 in 35 but I really h...
