Walleyeaxl, It looks like you got yourself a fine old Remington for a good price. I love the Model 81 and the 300 Savage is an excellent cartridge. My 81 is a 300 and it shoots quite well. Welcome to the forum. I really like your choice for your first Model 81 and it looks like you have a nice rifle. The 300 Savage is an excellent hunting cartridge. My 81 is also a 300 and it shoots quite well. Good luck with yours.

Welcome to the forum. Your Model 8 is quite a find. The engraving is beautiful. I keep hoping to find one like that, but it hasn't happened yet. I do love my plain vanilla Model 81 though.

Welcome to the forum. Like you, I'm a fan of vintage Remington rifles and the pump guns are particular favorites. I have a 121 in 22LR and a 141 in 35 Remington that are great hunting rifles. I think you are going to find the autos equally interesting.

Welcome to the forum. Like the rest of us, you will likely find these grand old rifles do get in your blood. Getting Henwood's book was an excellent move. There is a wealth of information there. I bought the first Model 81 that I ever handled. :D

As a combat rifle, the Garand excels. The Model 8/81 is a better sporting/hunting rifle in my opinion.

Very nice photos of a successful hunt. Texas sure has some funny looking horned critters (just kidding :lol: ) I'm really getting the itch to take the 81 after a hog. There are a few places an easy drive from my home that has great hog hunting.

I assume you are referring to the Henwood book. Try Amazon.com. They have the book and also have ties to many smaller book sellers that may have a good used copy. You might also try ABE books.

I have often listened to Paul Harvey on the radio. He had a real tallent for telling a story with his voice inflections and pregnant pauses. His stories were interesting and often inspiring. He will be missed.
