Re: Fluted buttstock M8
Looking at examples of Model 8's across 4 decades its easy to see a world of variation in buttstock configurations. From grip style but to butt plates. Top that off with the option of custom stocks w/ longer lengths of pull or modified drop. Adding to this is that the majority of Model 8 stocks have...

During rearward movement, the bolt carrier & connecting link are compressing an action spring inside a tube. My suggestion would be to disassemble and inspect those items.

The hard rubber (vulcanite) butt plates were used from the beginning of production to at least during WWI...maybe longer. Steel butt plates were mixed in there too but the earliest guns all have the hard rubber plates.Cam - any info on these hard rubber butt plates, dates of use, etc.?

Dad's selling a few things, here's a new old stock Model 81 forearm in the original Remington/Dupont packaging. Feel free to share the link with anyone that might be interested. Details: Flat-side forearm found on Model 81's from 1940-1950. BEAUTIFUL! Never been on a rifle. http://ebay.us/pQB9pB?cmp...

You're off to a great start rcranch! If you can acquire an original 15 round magazine, you've got a $5000-7000+ rifle on your hands. It's a shame about the regulation since the Model 8/81 were historically used around your kinda woods! Great alternative choices you've got there though

It's possible the seller saw one of the inspector/fitter stamps of "F" on the bottom of the rifle and assumed that meant "F" grade. Have come across that misconception several times.

correct. Especially if the original tang screw is present and the tang blueing is not outlined from where a peep once was.

Re: Repair date vs manufacture date - Please help
Date codes were not present on rifles prior to 1921. So...
If yours is indeed stamped "PN" then your rifle was manufactured June, 1922. And subsequently repaired on the date you indicated via the repair code.
When present always date the rifles via the date code.

Re: What year did they start putting tang sights on Model 8's?
I would say from the very beginning, at least evidence would support Remington's intention there. This by the pre-drilled & tapped tang screw found on the very earliest of rifles from 1906. Peeps were always factory options.

You don't see this very often. A brand new, old stock, never-been-on-a-rifle Remington Model 81 forearm. With original Remington packaging!
I don't know the year of mfg, but sometime between 1940-1950.
What do y'all think?
