Re: Standard Arms Model G

Hcompton79 that was a fantastic write up on the Standard Arms Model G! I thoroughly enjoyed the history, restoration, and shooting of your personal gun. The recoil on that looks very mild! I didn't realize the loading was a bit complicated with the shooter having to ensure the cartridges were manual...

Welcome aboard! I really enjoyed your story and your experience of how a firearm can be such a reminder of the love of a relative or friend.

My father too hunted with a Model 81 when he was younger and his affection for them spurred mine as well.

Glad you're here!

Remington's inspectors/fitters used a variety of approval stamps. There is nothing US Navy about this gun. It's strictly commercial.

With the evidence suggested by Hibby, I'd learn towards an old serial number alteration. I can't recall seeing many, if any, Model 8 serial numbers in that location that left the factory without proof marks above and/or below the serial number. That's very unusual. Plus the "Y" prefix that doesn't c...

Looking at examples of Model 8's across 4 decades its easy to see a world of variation in buttstock configurations. From grip style but to butt plates. Cam - any info on these hard rubber butt plates, dates of use, etc.?
The hard rubber (vulcanite) butt plates were used from the beginning of production to at least during WWI...maybe longer. Steel butt plates were mixed in there too but the earliest guns all have the hard rubber plates.
