One thing I'm interested in is finding out, if possible, what route these rifles took to get into the private market.

The FBI is not known for selling off their weapons to the public
good question, i'd love to know the answer :D

Hi Harmorby, Love your FN. Unfortunately, when manufactured, there was no provision for any alternative sighting system. Even a tang sight would require the drilling & tapping of at least 1 hole in the receiver tang (actually somewhat common in Canadian FN's). One idea would be to drift the rear sig...

The engraving, though nice, is not consistent with other D, E, & F grades of the time period. Also, game scene panels were reserved for "E" and "F" grades. The wood checkering is another "not factory" indicator of the gun. It doesn't resemble period Remington work neither in quality nor pattern. Pic...

As a purist collector, yes I think a mismatched magazine is a big deal, even if from the same dept. Hi jim c 351, great questions...the prices are considering that the rifles & magazines are in very good - excellent condition. Also, these guns sell so infrequently at auction that the prices below are an educated guess at best!

1) $5,000

2) $5,000-6,000+

3) $1,500

You're probably taking info from the Henwood book. Henwood, supported by many others, did a fantastic job of gathering research, original documents, and making observations. The bit about the apple marks were probably his observations. Your markings are normal.

this is a possibility. The downside would be having a rifle w/out matching serial numbers (and decreased value). I'd imagine most people would just buy a new rifle in the desired caliber.

I've owned & shot many many of these guns and have never seen one with a broken bolt carrier latch spring. Not sure what happened in the 2 cases you've had. It's unusual.

I wouldn't shoot any gun with a broken or missing part critical to the gun's safe functioning.

Never fired one w/out it! If there's no latch spring then there's no tension placed on the bolt carrier latch (which essentially controls the bolt), which also means there's no tension placed on the barrel lock. The latch needs vertical tension to engage with the bolt on rearward travel. When the ba...
