Re: New FN Style Barrel Tool

I will put my name in the hat.

With that said, is there a minimum number that is required for the run? Is there a number that will drop the unit cost?

I have not been in the site for ages, but if you are still taking orders I could use one set of each.

Thanks!

Re: Bolt carrier binding when it travels back

If you are talking about the first picture, bolt is unlocked and there is now a gap between bolt and barrel extension. It is not as long as a round, but it is there.

Re: Bolt carrier binding when it travels back

Thanks for the suggestion. I removed the action spring assembly, which was about 14in long unsprung; is that a proper length? There was some rusty dust on my fingers after handling it. The endcap (follower) that presses against the bolt carrier "rat tail" (using FAL terminology) does not l...

Bolt carrier binding when it travels back

I noticed if I pull the charging handle back, the bolt carrier gets stuck before reaching the end of travel. Short of covering with dykem and racking it a few times, what should I be looking for?

Re: barrel head

Wow. I thought that it would come off like the one in an AR: once you remove all the remains of the old pin, the barrel can be twisted off with a large lever of arm. I was just looking at how the pin goes in the extension and it seems either you drill the barrel after everything is lined up or you w...

Re: Recoil Spring dimensions for Model 8 in .35 Rem

So I talked to the guy who made recoil springs for paratrooper FALs whether he would be interested in doing a run of recoil springs. I could post his reply here but the bottom line is they had to have 100 sets sold just to break even. In the Model 8/81 case, that would mean 100 per caliber.

Re: barrel head

IMHO you might want to consider verifying the headspacing. I do not know if all barrels and barrel extensions were so perfectly made they were interchangeable with each other. I do know in an AR while the barrel + barrel extension *assembly* is usually headspaced against a standard bolt at any barre...

Phyrbird, AFAIK printers that can do metal parts (sintering) are still a bit pricy. Of course what is pricy to me might be nothing to others. I know they use them in aeronautical industry but I do not know if they can produce load-bearing pieces. Good site for that is http://www.practicalmachinist.c...

Re: 7.62x39......is the idea still alive & kicking?

Based on what I read about relining Mauser C96 pistols, how well done it will be really depend on the gunsmith. On the C96 case, it's barrel is 4" or longer and one of the main issues people have is the hole for the relining was not properly centered. The Model 8 barrel is a bit longer, but str...

Firsy attempt: not enough lubing?

So I took my Model 8 to the range yesterday. Ammo was a Remington-brand green box of 35 Remington in 200gr. As with all of my new 9to me firearms) I put one single round in magazine, pull bolt back, and let it go. And It did not want to close all the way: Remington_Model8_27.jpg Remington_Model8_28....

Bolt rotation

I was looking at the barrel in my Model 8 and could not figure out what makes the bolt rotate when it is about to lock itself against the barrel. Usually I would see some kind of groove in an angle that would grab the tabs and rotate the bolt, but I am not seeing that. Am I missing something?

Re: 7.62x39......is the idea still alive & kicking?

I do agree about matching the weight: if you need to match the barrel spring anyway might as well get close to a known quantity. What I think will be the hardest, unless you want to sacrifice a barrel (I would love to get a sewer pipe barrel to start with), is the area the bolt locks to. I need to t...

Re: Recoil springs?

If we can get enough people for a group buy, there are places which will make a run. I do not know how many Wolff Springs need to make a set, but there is a guy on falfiles who made the paratrooper recoil spring set for that rifle. All is needed is a good, not worn-out spring.

Well, from my thread (http://thegreatmodel8.remingtonsociety.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=5215) on the caliber and the thread you mentioned, you will need 1. The 35Remington/300Savage bolt because of the rim diameter 2. The 35Remington/300Savage recoil spring 3. To make a barrel. This IMHO is...

Stupid question: I have two magazines, thanks to chas1949. Remington_Model8_09-sm.jpg Just for the fun of it, I took the follower+spring of the which has both (un-numbered) and put them in the other one (with serial number on it). Stuck Bolt: pulled back too far?

So I reassembled my Model 8, at least the non-barrel side of the business. I felt the bolt was dragging a bit so I lubed its outside before sliding it in. I cycled it a bit carefully since I found some of the parts wanted to fall off if the trigger housing (lower receiver for the AR crowd  ) wa...

If you are willing to settle for a slip-on pad, check out the MAS 36 ones. They come in two sizes ~1" and ~2" thick.

Here is a picture of the MAS 36 2" thick one:

Re: 7.62x39

Interesting: I tried to put a 7.62x39 round in the bolt and it acted like it was a bit too fat for it. But this is supposed to be a 35 remington bolt, which according to my little table has larger base/rim diameter than the x39.

I feel rather confused.

7.62x39

More as a mental exercise than suggesting it to be done, and ignoring barrel issues for now: would 7.62x39 be a good modern caliber for the 8/81?
