Re: Rem Model 8 POE

The rest of the story, I finally got a look at the rifle mentioned in the original post. The 15 rd mag was very nice and had a 66,xxx serial number. The rifle had a 35xx serial number and was not very nice. The machining for the mag was very professional and locked the mag in soundly. The gun fired ...

Bob,
Thanks for the input.
Was there any clue as to whether the conversion was done in the 30's or 90's.
Not sure what to look for.

Re: Rem Model 8 POE

Cam, Thanks for the offer. If anything develops I will surely take you up on the offer. Point of clarification,-- The gun came from an auction, not a PD. I just used the PD for one of the examples. So there is no telling who previously owned it. One thing I "think" I remember is the butt p...

Re: Rem Model 8 POE

Cam,
Thanks,
It was interesting to learn that a miss matched mag wasn't a big deal, but a gun machined in Joe's basement was a real big deal.
This really puts the pressure a buyer to decide who did the work.
Many thanks,

Rem Model 8 POE

A friend has a Remington model 8 for sale. It has a POE, 15 rd mag. The mag ser. no. does not match the rifle. I have not seen the rifle for several months so I cannot answer questions about the forend and other M8 POE characteristics. Can some one give the average values for the following possibili...

Re: Model 81 Bolt malfunction

leben, I know how you feel, but be cautious trying to force someone to do something that he is incapable of doing. Even the small percentage of gunsmiths that actually went to a trade school probably learned about blueing, 1911s and AR15s. Probably didn't have a model 8 within 200 miles of the schoo...

As John Henwood said in his book on the 8/81, "where do you find a gunsmith that knows a thing about a model 8."
I wish you luck but I have my doubts as to whether the last gunsmith solved your problem.

Re: magazine for Winchester 1905, 35cal

Joe, Thanks, I offered the guy $85.00 but was rejected. I bought my M1905 on GB.com. Bidding ended on Wednesday. On Tuesday two 35 cal mags ended. I placed bids but didn't go very high since I didn't know if I'd get the gun. I have a 351 mag that works fairly well, but would like to get a proper mag...

Re: Headspace issue on Model 8 32 Rem

Mike, If your rifle has a headspace problem I can't think of any solution short of switching barrels and bolts. Therefore I'd focus on the brass. Years ago, when I shot an M1 and M14s a lot I would get these separations every now and then. Never kept track of number of times fired. I started to insp...

Re: 30-30 dies for 30 Rem

Thanks for all the comments. It goes without saying that the ideal solution is to buy a set of 30 Rem dies. I my case I don't own a rifle in 30 Rem caliber. I have a friend who does own such a caliber. I don't want to spend $80.00 just to load a box or two a year for my friend. I was hoping for a ch...

Re: detachable magazines

Apparently Pete never got back to Robert. To bad.
Stripper clips work fine for fast reloads but the detachable mag works best for unloading.
Especially when done frequently as when moving from one location to another.
Big advantage to the Win 351 and 401.

Re: Model 81 Low Capacity Magazine (POE)

L C Borden, I'm no expert but from what I have been able to learn you will never find such a magazine and if you did it would probably be very expensive. I suggest that you have a 5 shot mag made at a good machine shop, using your 15 shot mag as a pattern. Jim C PS another thought. Would it be legal...

Take care where you lay the rifle. My pre 8 rifle has a patch of pitting near the muzzle that likely was caused by blood.

I own a 07 and a 10. What works with the Remington will not work with the Winchester. That's why I use snap caps.

No.
Use an empty case as a snap cap or machine a proper rim on a 357 snap cap.

Re: Frozen take down bolt

Darryl,
I would fire 15 shots rapid fire, give the take down bolt a sharp rap on the end with a lead mallet, put a crescent wrench on the locking bolt,(not the locking bolt lever) and give the wrench a rap with the lead mallet, all while the gun was still hot.
I require no fee for this advise.

Here are the tools I came up with to work on the barrel jacket. The hex nut is bored out to fit over the barrel nut and is used to remove/replace the barrel nut and barrel jacket bushing. Clip and ammunition. Since I can't afford to shoot factory 35 Remington, the first order of business is to come up with some reloads that work the action of the Remington.
